Confirmed: NBA Buys Pelicans.com

Pelicans.com Domain NameA few weeks ago, I noticed that the Whois had changed for the Pelicans.com domain name, and Marksmen was listed as the registrant. Neither the domain broker nor a representative from Marksmen  would confirm what I assumed, that the NBA was the buyer for Pelicans.com.

According to the most recent and current Whois information, the NBA did purchase the Pelicans.com domain name, and it will be used by the New Orleans basketball team that will be known as the Pelicans beginning next season.

When Media Options was brokering Pelicans.com, the asking price for the domain name was $125,000. I am not sure what the final sale price was, and since all parties are closely held, it’s likely that the sale price will not be made public.

At the moment, Pelicans.com is forwarding to the New Orleans Hornets website, and I am sure that it will be used as the team’s website once the name change occurs.

Congratulations to the NBA on making this wise acquisition, and congratulations to the Pelicans band that was the seller of the domain name. The deal came together quickly, likely because of the expertise of Media Options and Mark Monitor, which ensured a smooth transaction.

  1. Good on the NBA for stepping up, and being quick, and discreet about this. Very professional, and the right thing to do.

From a fan perspective BULLS is right, this name sucks.

  2. This name was advertised at a great price point for the NBA. $125,000 is nothing in the scope of things when you are talking professional sports. I am sure they tried to get a better deal but in the end probably paid the whole asking price with no issues. Easiest money Media Options has ever made. Having a big fish on the line already when given the task to sell a name is money in the bank.

  3. A great “cost virtually nothing” deal for the NBA … especially given that the top players earn more than $125k/game.

    And tax-deductible to boot.

  4. What I trying to ask was that the Hornets also utilized Hornets Groups and Hornets Nest Online.Com respectfully. My question to you if you know, do the Pelicans plan on bringing those two web sites mentioned above but adding Pelicans and removing Hornets from Groups and Nest on line.? Thx.
