Rick Schwartz Rails Against New Extensions

Rick “Domain King” Schwartz has never been a proponent of the new gTLD extensions. Rick has invested in quite a few non .com domain names, but I think he has been fairly outspoken against the new extensions for quite some time. I recall a panel at the 2013 TRAFFIC conference in which Rick and Lonnie Borck debated the new gTLD domain names against leaders of companies in that space.

During the last several days, Rick has taken to Twitter to share his strong feelings about the current state of the new domain name extensions. Although Rick has over 1,000 tweets on Twitter, he had taken a long hiatus from posting until February 25th. In the past few days, he has unleashed a fury of tweets about the new domain extensions, the new gTLD aftermarket, companies that sell domain names, and more. Here are just a handful of the tweets Rick posted during the past several days:

Rick Schwartz Sold Teem.com

Earlier today, George Kirikos tweeted about a $13.5 million round of funding for a company called Teem, that had previously been known as EventBoard:

George also mentioned that the company acquired the Teem.com domain name from well-known domain investor, Rick Schwartz:

teem-comOn Rick’s DomainKing.com website, he mentioned the sale of Teem.com, stating “Soon I will be announcing another deal for Teem.com, in which there is a cash and an equity component.”

I reached out to Rick to see if he could comment on the deal, and he said he

TRAFFIC Prices Increase Soon

The TRAFFIC conference in Miami in coming up in just a few weeks, and the prices for the conference pass  and the hotel are going up soon. I received an email with some details about the price increase from Rick Schwartz, and I want to share it with you so you don’t miss out on the current rate.

Here’s what Rick had to say about the conference price increases in this morning’s email:

TRAFFIC Keynote Speakers Announced

Rick Schwartz announced the two keynote speakers for the TRAFFIC conference coming up at the end of the month, and I think both are excellent choices. Howard Lefkowitz, the former President and CEO of Vegas.com, will be speaking on Friday, May 30 at 11:30 in the morning.  Duane Forrester, Senior Product Manager at Bing, will be speaking on Thursday, May 29 at 10:15 in the morning.

You have mostly likely heard of Vegas.com. If not, it is probably the best geodomain success story. The company is an all encompassing Las Vegas travel website where you can book vacations, make dinner reservations, and read about Las Vegas tours and activities. Lefkowitz joined the company in 2001, and until then end of his tenure in 2010, he helped to grow the heck out of the company and brand. You can read more about the brand and Lefkowitz on HotelInteractive.com.

Duane Forrester is a search expert, and in his position at Bing, he helps webmasters and publishers learn about how to leverage their content to improve their visibility. He  has spoken at most of the major SEO and webmaster conferences, and his opinions and feedback are highly sought after. To give you an idea of how much Forrester’s opinions are respected, he will also be the keynote speaker at Pubcon Las Vegas in October.

Rick Schwartz Gives TRAFFIC Price and Auction Update

I am planning to make my second trip of the year to Las Vegas for the TRAFFIC conference, which will be held May 28 to 31 at the Bellagio. This morning, Rick Schwartz shared a couple of TRAFFIC updates I want to share with you because time is of the essence.

In reference to the cost of attending, Rick announced:

Right now when you sign up for

Where is Rick Schwartz?

I noticed that Rick Schwartz hasn’t posted an article on his blog in over a month. His last post was published on January 27, and it is pretty clear that the graphics he shared were related to domain investors having to make decisions about the new gTLD domain names. Since the article was published, it has become an active, ongoing discussion with over 125 comments to date.

Over the weekend, I reached out to Rick to check in and make sure he’s doing alright since I had not heard from him in a while. I thought perhaps he was on his annual cruise and had taken an extra long vacation. Turns out, he is not on an extended vacation, and all is well with him.

With his permission, here’s what Rick shared about why he hasn’t written anything on his blog for over a month:

After spending a year and a half articulating all the pitfalls of the GTlds, I decided once they came out, to sit on the sidelines, not say anything so no one can blame me for anything that might happen,  as some already started to do.  The pitfalls, both known and unknown that they are and will be experiencing, will be even bigger and greater than anything I have said so far.

I am on record and I won’t say another word. I’ll let the numbers and the events speak for themselves.”
