.NYC Registrations Passes .London

Because of my personal connection with New York City and the domain space, I have been paying closer attention to the .NYC domain name extension than other new gTLD extensions. I have been following along with .NYC since prior to the application process. According to today’s update at NTLDStats.com, it looks like there are now more .NYC domain names than .London domain names. As of this morning, there are 48,671 .NYC domain names, and there are 48,479 .London domain names.

.London had about a one month head start to sell its domain names to the general public. .NYC went on sale to the general public on October 8, 2014 and .London went on sale to the general public on September 9, 2014. Both TLDs have strong local support. Two weeks ago, the .NYC team at Neustar along with representatives from the Office of the Mayor of New York City  rang the opening bell at the NYSE  to celebrate the launch of .NYC domain names.

The populations of London and New York City seem to be

Poll: .Net vs. New gTLD

Yesterday, I read Kevin Murphy’s article, “Is the free ride over for Verisign’s .net?” In the article, cited comments from Verisign CEO Jim Bidzos and Verisign CFO George Kilguss regarding the current state of .net domain names and their future.

After sharing public comments made by Bidzos and Kilguss, Murphy wrote, “As .com buyers start to see more and more options for duplicative or defensive registrations in their shopping carts, they’re going to be less likely to grab the .net to match their .com, in my opinion.” I tend to agree with Murphy on this, although I’ve never really bought the .net (or .org), especially if it involved paying a premium.

Uniregistry Domain Names Now at GoDaddy

Uniregistry has been selling its new gTLD domain names since the end of February of this year,  but they have not been selling them via GoDaddy, the largest domain name registrar in the world. According to a tweet from Uniregistry founder Frank Schilling, as of yesterday, new gTLD domain names managed by Uniregistry are now available for purchase by customers at GoDaddy.

I checked, and GoDaddy is now selling Uniregistry extensions like .link, .sexy, .tattoo, .blackfriday, .guitars, and others. The pricing seems comparable to other registrars, although the prices are more expensive than buying the domain names directly from Uniregistry (not taking any discounts into consideration).

In February of this year, Kevin Murphy of DomainIncite.com wrote an article about “why registrars are boycotting .sexy” and other Uniregistry new gTLD domain names. In his article,

Bluehost “Rebrands” as Pink.Host for Breast Cancer Awareness

4

Pink.HostOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness month in the United States, and many businesses and organizations are hosting special events to generate awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for organizations that do breast cancer research. Most famously, the National Football League dons pink gear to raise awareness. I learned that hosting provider Bluehost is participating in its own unique way using a new gTLD domain name.

For the month of October, BlueHost is using a website on the Pink.Host domain name to raise money for cancer research at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Utah. According to an email I received, “the company received the domain names blue.host and pink.host as part of its Pioneer program participation with Radix,” the registry managing .Host domain names.

A press release I received from Radix Registry explains the significance behind the special Pink.Host website:

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer Talks .NYC

4

I want to share the video below that appeared on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN). It is a roundtable discussion with Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, and the topic of the discussion is the new .NYC domain extension. The program originally aired on television on Sunday, October 5 at 7:00 pm, and  I am not sure how many people watched the television show.

There were three panelists in addition to the Manhattan Borough President:

  • Ana Guzman from Neustar
  • Betsy Bober Polivy from ideways.nyc (.NYC Founders Program)
  • Ken Biberaj from The Russian Tea Room (.NYC Founders Program)

The panel discussed what the new gTLDs are, how .NYC domain names can be used (and by whom), how .NYC came about, and how some companies will be using the .NYC domain names.

I lived in New York City for ten years, and from my understanding, the primary objective of each Borough President is to promote their borough. This is an elected position for each of NYC’s 5 boroughs, and Gale Brewer is the Borough President for Manhattan, following her career as a member of the City Council.

B. Riley & Co: 20 Million New gTLD Domain Names by 2016

Earlier this week, Sameet Sinha, Sr. Equity Research Analyst at B. Riley & Co., published a research report on the new gTLD business and Rightside. The report, which is available to B. Riley clients and subscribers, made some projections about the new gTLD domain names and the impact they will have across the board in the domain industry (from registries to registrars to service providers…etc). In addition, Mr. Sinha initiated coverage on Rightside (ticker: NAME) with a Buy rating and $15 price target.

Mr. Sinha’s report offered an extensive overview of the domain name space, as well as a history of the new gTLD program. It was quite comprehensive, and I think it will give readers a greater knowledge about the technical aspect of domain ownership and operations. If someone were to ask me for a resource to  explain the gTLD program, I think this report would give them all of the information they need to learn about its genesis and future.

I thought Mr. Sinha’s report was quite interesting, especially because it comes from someone  outside of the domain investment space.  With Mr. Sinha’s permission, I want to share some excerpts from the report as well as a few projections that were made:
