Google Announces Waymo; Recently Acquired Waymo.com + @waymo

google-waymo-logoAccording to an article in TechCrunch and a variety of other tech industry publications, Google is/has spun out its self-driving car unit into a new brand called Waymo. The company is part of Google’s parent company, Alphabet.

I was curious to see if the company acquired the exact match .com domain name, Waymo.com, and it looks like they did. According to Whois records, the current registrant of Waymo.com is Google, Inc. Using DomainTools Whois History Tool, I was able to see that the domain name was owned for a short period by DNStination Inc., a domain management company (among other things). Prior to this, Waymo.com appears to have been owned by a Colorado-based company called Waymo.

My guess is that Google used DNStination to stealthily acquire this domain name. If this is the case, this was a

G Suite: Major Google Rebrand Without Domain Name

g-suite-google-logoYesterday afternoon, I received several emails from Google with an eye catching subject: [IMPORTANT] Introducing G Suite, formerly Google Apps. In the email Google said, “Today, we’re introducing a new name that better reflects this mission: G Suite.” The entire rebranding announcement can be found on a Google blog post.

Despite the wide use of this product and the clear importance of announcing this rebrand, it does not appear that Google acquired the matching GSuite.com domain name. As of right now, Google is using gsuite.google.com as the home page for its G Suite product. In my opinion, it would be wise for Google to acquire GSuite.com, especially considering the importance of the services in the G Suite portfolio.

According to DomainTools, the registrant of

It Looks Like Google Owns Zero.com

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the Zero.com UDRP. Perhaps as a result of this UDRP filing, we now know who owns Zero.com: Google. Have a look at the current Whois record found at DomainTools. A screenshot of this current Whois record can be found below:

Google Domains Now Using Domains.Google

According to a tweet that was published this afternoon, Google Domains is now using a .Google domain name for its website. Previously, the company was using Domains.Google.com for its website, but it recently changed its url to Domains.Google:

I would imagine that many people in the new gTLD space will applaud Google’s move to a .Google domain name. It makes sense that the company would begin using its branded domain name for this particular business unit.

The one thing that seems a bit strange to me is that the registrar is

“Google” is a Trending .Net Keyword in November

When Verisign released its list of  “Top 10 Trending Keywords in .Com & .Net Registrations in October,” I was surprised to see that “Nike” was one of the trending keywords. This month, another popular and well known brand is on the list for .Net registrations.

Here’s a tweet from Verisign announcing the monthly list, along with a blog post that shares more information about the monthly trend list:

Google Acquires Alphabet.net

Alphabet.net

Since creating a corporate entity called Alphabet, it looks like Google is continuing to acquire Alphabet related domain names. According to a now public Whois record, Google, Inc. is showing up as the owner of Alphabet.net.

Jamie Zoch first reported the acquisition via Twitter, and he speculated that the company acquired Alphabet.net back in August. On July 31, 2015 (and prior to that), Alphabet.net was owned by a domain registrant based in Ohio. The Whois information went private around August 10th, and it just emerged from privacy on November 27.

The Alphabet.net domain name does not
