MicroStrategy CEO Comments About Domain Names

MicroStrategy (MSTR on NASDAQ) held its earnings conference call on July 30, 2019. As you likely know, MicroStrategy sold Voice.com for $30 million in the second quarter of 2019. This was the largest all-cash domain name sale of all time, and it had an impact on the company’s earnings.

During the conference call yesterday, MicroStrategy CEO Michael J. Saylor made some comments about the sale of Voice.com. He also offered some insight about the valuation of domain names.

You can read the entire transcript on Yahoo Finance, but below is an excerpt with Mr. Saylor’s comments about Voice.com and the value of great domain names:

Brian Norgard: Premium Domain Names are “Internet beachfront property”

Brian Norgard is a tech leader who is perhaps most well-known for his role as Chief Product Officer (CPO) at Tinder. In fact, TechCrunch published an article about his departure from Tinder in November of 2018. Yesterday morning, Brian posted a tweet sharing his opinion about premium domain names while referencing the $30 million sale Voice.com, which was announced last month:

Some of My America Related Domain Names

It’s the 4th of July here in the US, and most Americans are celebrating Independence Day today. We rented a large inflatable water slide for the kids and bought a few other outdoor activities for kids and adults. My wife is running a 5k this morning, and then we will watch a local parade. Like many others, we will fire up the BBQ grill and have a few families over to celebrate the holiday later on today.

I thought I would share some of the America-related domain names I currently own. If you have any great “American” .com domain names, I invite you to share them in the comment section. Here are 10 American domain names I own:

Domain Flipping: Bad Advice from Business Insider

It’s almost always nice to see a mainstream publication covering the business of domain name investing. Many of these articles focus on the ease of domain investing for the average person to make some extra money, and while it’s not usually as easy as is implied, I do think there are opportunities for people to make extra money if they spend some time learning about domain names and what makes a good domain name investment.

Real Estate Investing Article Sounds Like Domain Investing

I read an article about real estate investing in the Boston Globe that had some very interesting parallels to the world of domain name investing. Even the title (“Investors are flipping housing markets, and buyers are reeling“) could be slightly modified to reflect the business of domain name investing and what some domain name buyers believe.

The gist of the article is that real estate investors who are buying homes as investments are making it more difficult and expensive for first time home buyers to purchase homes. I imagine there are startups who would say that domain name investors buying domain names as investments make it more difficult for businesses to buy their desired domain names.

Here are a few excerpts and quotes from the article that I can easily imagine changing a few words to make it reflective of the domain investment market:

Spotted: Two Totally Different Domain Names

I am always on the lookout for good domain names when I am out and about. Earlier today, I took a drive to Canton, Massachusetts to pick up some beer from a great brewery called Trillium. I ran in their 5k a couple of weeks ago, and I ran past a church that was using a .Church domain name. I didn’t get a chance to take a photo of the church sign then, but I remembered to do it today when I was in the area again.

On my way to take the photo of the .Church sign, I stumbled across a totally different domain name on the back of a truck. Apparently, there is a Del Monte warehouse right near Trillium, and the backs of their trucks proudly display the Fruits.com url (along with FreshDelMonte.com). Fruits.com was created back in 1997.

Here’s a photo of the back of the truck:
