NamesCon is going to look much, much different this year. Not only is the event being held exclusively online, but it is also being held in September instead of January. One other major change is that the NamesCon domain name auction will be held on GoDaddy Auctions this year, and it appears that the auction is being run entirely in-house.

GoDaddy’s Joe Styler tweeted that the NamesCon auction is now live on GoDaddy Auctions. To access the auction, visit GoDaddy Auctions and choose the NamesCon Auction in the Popular Searches dropdown menu:

As someone who operates a domain investment industry website, I am regularly approached by people looking to sell their domain names. I hardly ever buy domain names when people approach me in an unsolicited manner, but it may not be for the reason you think. Yes, the vast majority of domain names that are sent are domain names I would not hand register, but my preference is to buy inventory types of domain names at expiry auction.

Earlier this week, I passed on a small group of average domain names sent by someone through my contact form. When I passed, the person remarked that they were similar to names he saw that I had recently bought and wondered why I wasn’t interested in making an offer. I gave him some reasons and used my reply as the base of this article.

This morning, I want to share 5 reasons why I prefer purchasing domain name at expiry auctions over buying domain names from people who send them to me:

I was pretty surprised when I came across a NamePros thread last week about a GoDaddy program I was neither aware of nor had I heard about. Apparently, there was a rewards program that gave GoDaddy account credit for buying GoDaddy products and services. What stood out to me was that this apparently included purchasing domain names in auction at GoDaddy Auctions.

A .org domain name achieved the highest sale price in Sedo’s monthly Great Domains Auction, which ended this afternoon. Farming.org sold today for $9,500, surpassing the $9,300 sale of Trisha.com and $7,600 sale of Deserts.com. Flammable.com sold for $5,300. In total, 31 domain names were sold in this month’s auction for a total of nearly $60,000 USD.

These auctions just ended this afternoon and have not yet closed. Once the domain names are paid for and transferred, Sedo will report them to DNJournal and NameBio for archiving.

Colin Campbell, Chairman and Founder of the .Club Registry, tweeted about a new domain name drop catching service that will be launched by NameSilo. The service is called Catch.Club, and NameSilo CMO Endrit Muca shared more information about the service in the video below. You can also learn more about the service on the website.

It does not look like Catch.Club is open for business yet, but I signed up for updates on the website. Despite the fact that the drop catching service is operating on a .Club domain name, the website notes “support only .com but more nTLD and ccTLDs are coming.”

Two similar domain names expired at Network Solutions and were auctioned at NameJet in the last two weeks. I thought it was worth comparing Perfect10.com and PerfectTen.com to share why I think there was such a substantial difference in the sale prices of these two similar domain names.

Perfect10.com was created in 1998, and PerfectTen.com was created in 1997. Both domain names appear to have been owned by the same entity, an adult publishing company behind the Perfect 10 brand. Perfect10.com sold for nearly 9x the sale price of PerfectTen.com. Interestingly, I do not believe the same entity won both domain name auctions at NameJet.
