Interesting Facts About .CO on Its Fifth Anniversary

0

Five years ago today, .CO domain names became available for people around the world to register. Neustar, the parent company of the .CO Registry, is celebrating the 5th birthday of the .CO Registry today. In honor of this occasion, the company published a detailed press release along with three infographics that share some great information about .CO domain names.

To me, one of the most interesting aspects of the celebration is that Neustar and the .CO Registry aren’t simply touting the accomplishments of the Registry in the press release. The focus of the news is  more geared towards the accolades of companies using .CO domain names. The .CO Registry has worked very hard to create a community amongst its registrants, and celebrating its registrants rather than itself on this anniversary is not surprising to me.

Some interesting facts shared in the press release and three accompanying infographics include:

“Looking for a Catchy .CO Name…”

At the last update, there were well over 1 million .CO domain names registered. I think there are quite a few .CO domain names still in the hands of people in the domain investment space, and I want to share a tweet that I saw for a company looking for a .CO domain name for a business.

The buyer’s budget was not posted in the tweet, so I don’t know what the company is looking to spend on a domain name. The ask is fairly vague, but the company is looking for something for a store that sells audio, lighting, sound, and other similar types of equipment.

Based on the number of .CO domain names I see listed for sale, I would bet someone owns a domain name that might be of interest. If you have something, you may want to send him a tweet with a submission.

Good luck!

Poll: What is 8.CO Worth?

Tech Cocktail published an extensive article about the 8.CO domain name  that is now  up for auction via Heritage Auctions. You’ll notice that Tech Cocktail uses Tech.CO for its website, so it isn’t a surprise that the author wrote that 8.CO “may just be the luckiest domain on the Web.”

I think the auction is going to do well, and the article cites quite a few factors that could drive the price significantly higher. Some of the factors cited by the author, in addition to some of my own factors:

4 of “10 African Startups That Rocked 2014” Use .CO

Over the weekend, CNN published an article written by Loy Okezie that covered  10 African startups that rocked 2014. In the opinion of the author, the ten companies that were profiled “are 10 of the most exciting young companies of the year.”  From a domain name perspective, the most interesting aspect of the article to me is that 4 of the 10 startups that were profiled use  .CO domain names  for their websites. Additionally, 6 of the 10 companies do not use .com domain names for their websites.

Here is a list of the 10 startups that were profiled in this article, as well as the domain names they are using:

Neustar Rings NYSE Opening Bell

Neustar is one of a handful of domain industry publicly traded companies (stock symbol NSR on the NYSE), and representatives from Neustar rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange this morning to open the trading day.  The focus of the event was on the new .NYC domain names, and representatives from the Office of the Mayor of New York City also participated in the bell ringing.

I embedded the video of the NYSE opening bell ceremony, so you can see how  .NYC was promoted at the New York Stock Exchange. Video of the opening bell is generally carried on the financial news networks, and it is often followed by interviews with some of the participants. I am not sure if that happened in this case, but ringing the opening bell gives good exposure to the companies who participated.

Monsieur: Cool Product on a .CO Domain Name

In this morning’s CrunchBase Daily email newsletter, I read about Monsieur, a product that is billed as an “intelligent bartending system.” I went to check out the company’s website, and I saw that they are operating on an exact match .CO domain name, Monsieur.CO. The product looks very cool, and I could see it taking off and being used at tailgates, special events, and even at private homes (despite the high cost).

Monsieur is a great brand name for this product because the word “monsieur” is a French word, similar in meaning to the English “Mr.” In this particular case, I don’t think using a .CO domain name is a poor decision because the corresponding .com domain name is owned by Digimedia, and it would likely be expensive (probably very expensive). This is a consumer product, and I think it will be easy to find them. The downside is that
