Victor Pitts Hired by MMX as Director of Premium Sales

MMX LogoThis morning, I received an announcement about another noteworthy domain industry hiring. Industry veteran Victor Pitts has joined MMX (formerly known as Minds & Machines) as Director of Premium Sales for the Americas. Many people in the domain space likely know Victor from his days at Moniker (and Oversee.net), and more recently at Above.com.

In his new role with MMX, Victor will be working on selling some of the premium-designated domain names in the new extensions operated by MMX. Victor will also be working on various industry partnerships. I am sure his industry experience will be particularly helpful with the later aspect of his new role.

MMX also recently hired Solomon Amoako as VP of Channel Management.

The press release announcing the news is found below. Thank you to Simon Cousins for sharing the news with me. (more…) → Read More

Video: Why is .VIP Popular in China?

I am the first to admit that I don't really understand the Chinese domain name market. I understand why certain domain names have significant value, but I have no idea about the underlying factors that are really contributing to the growth in capital that has been pouring into the domain space.

One example of my lack of knowledge relates to .VIP domain names. Believe it or not, there are now nearly half a million registered .VIP domain names, according to nTLDStats.com. Over 83% of those registered domain names are parked. Also interestingly, I believe the 5 registrars with the greatest volume of .VIP domain name registrations are based in China.

I saw a video shared by 101Domain that offers some insight about why .VIP domain names are so popular, and I embedded it below for those who want to learn more about the extension and its popularity amongst buyers in  China. The video features Joe Alagna of 101Domain, Susan Lawrence of Minds + Machines (operator of .VIP), and Simon Cousins of Allegravita, a specialist in the Chinese → Read More

Antony Van Couvering Out as CEO of Minds & Machines

I received a press release this morning announcing that Antony Van Couvering  is no longer CEO of Minds & Machines, the company he founded. I did a quick Google search to confirm the  report, and I saw that Antony published an article about this on CircleID: I Got Fired.

Here's an excerpt about the news from the press release:

Minds + Machines Group Limited (LSE:MMX), the publicly quoted owner and operator of Internet top-level domains, announces that Antony Van Couvering is no longer the Chief Executive Officer of the Company. Mr Van Couvering was removed from office with immediate effect by means of a unanimous resolution of directors passed at a meeting of directors held on 19 February 2016. The Group is currently making the transition from asset gatherer to monetisation of its leading portfolio of top-level domains; the Board believes a change of leadership will assist in this process. As such, the Board is delighted that the Company's Chief Marketing Officer, Toby Hall, has, subject to regulatory approvals, accepted the → Read More

.Miami Domains Banner at Dolphins Game Part of Larger Effort

.Miami Domain names at GoDaddy

GoDaddy and the .Miami domain registry have been teaming up to market .Miami domain names using a variety of channels. One attention grabbing tactic was seen by thousands who attended the Miami Dolphins NFL game this past Sunday.

As you can see from the photos above and below, a small airplane flew around Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida with a banner advertising .Miami domain names available at GoDaddy for "40% off." The banner was part of a larger marketing effort being undertaken by Minds & Machines, the operators of the .Miami domain extension, and GoDaddy.

Walmart.Horse: Great Publicity for M+M

One of the biggest domain name stories of the last week involves the Walmart.Horse domain name and landing page. The short version of the story is that a person registered the Walmart.Horse domain name, and a company representing Walmart sent a cease and desist letter to the owner. The owner responded to the C&D, and here we are.

There has been quite a bit of press coverage of this story, and I think the buzz is good for the registry operator, Minds+Machines. Some of the news outlets that published articles about Walmart.Horse include:

  • Ars Techica

  • The Consumerist

  • New York Daily News

  • Business Insider

  • Toronto Star

  • Fortune

I don't think Minds + Machines could (more…) → Read More
