Set a December Reminder for Domain Name Follow-Ups

Yesterday, I was discussing an acquisition target with GoDaddy DBS Broker Jordan Cavanaugh. The company told Jordan it wasn’t interested in selling the domain name as it planned to use it. From what I can see, the domain name has been owned by the same company for many years and hasn’t been built. I suggested a follow-up in December to try and close a deal.

I think early to mid December can be a good time to follow-up with domain name owners when I am trying to buy a domain name. It can also be a good time to follow-up with prospective buyers who previously inquired about one of my domain names.

The timing is important. I think there is a bit of a lull between the US Thanksgiving holiday and Christmas. Things tend to be very busy prior to Thanksgiving and then again just before Christmas through the end of the year. Many companies are closing out the year, trying to hit revenue targets, or deciding how to allocate remaining budgetary funds that haven’t been spent. For the couple of weeks in early December, there may be a bit more time to catch someone to chat about a domain name.

For a domain name owner looking to sell a domain name, it can be a good time to follow up with a prospective buyer who may have some incremental budget to spend on a domain name. They may have a bit of free time to focus on getting a deal across the finish line.

For someone looking to buy a domain name, December can also be a good time to revisit a prior inquiry. Maybe the company wants to hit a revenue target and selling a domain name will help. Maybe the registrant wants to start off the next year by selling a domain name.

A December follow-up gives both sides some flexibility. A deal can potentially close before the end of the year if that is helpful. Alternatively, the parties can agree on terms and plan to complete the transaction at the beginning of the new year.

I like following up on deals in December. It’s after the Thanksgiving rush has ended and before people have shut things down for end of year vacations. There’s time to close a deal or time to lock in a deal for the next year.
