SexEducation.com recently sold via NameJet for $18,900. George Kirikos noted on Twitter that the sale price declined by 84.25% since it sold at the 2006 TRAFFIC domain name auction for $120,000. That auction resulted in $4.5 million worth of domain name sales, according to an article written by Andrew Allemann shortly after its conclusion.
In looking through the sale list, there were some exceptional buys, and I am sure some of the buyers made quite a bit of money by reselling domain names they purchased during the auction. I thought it would be interesting to see what readers think was the best deal from that auction. I had a look through the list of sales, and I shared what I think are the top 10 sales (no, the $200,000 Flowers.mobi sale did not make the list). I invite you to vote for the best deal of the auction. If you think I missed the top deal, you are welcome to share in the comment section.
Because of a plugin issue, the site had to be restored to a version from earlier this morning. As a result, the comments that were submitted are no longer here. I invite you to re-share your commentary.
Because the poll is hosted by a third party, those results were not lost.
By today’s standards all of these are a bargain.
SexEducation.com was quite a steal. However, the absolute biggest steal there appears to be…
Own.com
I was there when the auction took place.
I remember many people (including myself) thinking that prices for domains will continue to go up and up and up. Even some mediocre and marginal names going for high prices.
Now, 12 yrs later, we realize premium domains have solid value. And, crappy names are similar to a lottery ticket. Maybe, you get lucky but the odds are against you.
The other side of Elliot’s question is, will today’s prices produce the same ROI in the future as the past 12 yrs? My vote is a big – NO.
Have they plateaued ?? Who knows.
Foreclosures.com was a nice value buy.
