Snapnames & Moniker: Changes Coming

According to an email that was sent to Moniker and Snapnames clients on Saturday afternoon, some big changes will be coming based on feedback received from clients. The updates and upgrades will be made on Monday, September 27, 2010.

Some of the changes described in the email include:

  • You can now register and search for domain names more quickly while keeping up-to-date on upcoming opportunities for buying and selling domain names at auctions. This includes a more streamlined navigation as well as look and feel.
  • The company opened, and will continue to add to, a resource center to provide you information and tips. This includes articles, videos and interviews.
  • Account Management: Moniker Domain Management and SnapNames Auction activities can now be found in the “My Account” area of each site.
  • Their support portal now includes an expanded knowledge base where you can submit and track your questions across all of your Oversee.net accounts. The portal is available and monitored 365 days a year.

You can have a look at the SnapNames video of changes made in the account area of the sites, and/or you can view the Moniker video of changes made in the account area of the sites.

Restaurants.com Up for Auction

I was just informed of some of the Snapnames/Moniker live auction inventory for the DomainFest conference in Prague next month, and there are several fantastic domain names up for sale, including Restaurants.com.   The reserve prices are high (“$5MM and up” for Restaurants.com), but it’s nice to see some great quality new inventory at live auctions.

Some of the featured live auction names include:

  • Restaurants.com
  • Zip.com
  • Digital.com
  • Sexy.com
  • Cheat.com
  • Physicians.com
  • Campaign.com
  • Vehicles.com
  • Commercial.com
  • MX.com
  • LawFirm.com
  • Democracy.com

The live auction will take place on Wednesday, October 6, at 10am ET (7am PT). Bidding can be done on the Snapnames platform, or bidders can choose to bid over the phone with a company representative. After the live auction has been completed, there will be a silent, extended auction until Wednesday, October 13, at 3:15pm ET (12:15 pm PT).

Report: Israel Buys @israel Twitter Handle for 6 Figures, But Not Israel.com for 7 Figures When It Was Auctioned

**Update** The Jerusalem Post is reporting that the actual price was $3,000.

According to several news reports, including one in the New York Times, Israel bought the rights to use the @israel Twitter handle found at Twitter.com/israel. Although the price was not revealed in the Times article, it was reported to be in the six figure range by The First Post. Because of Twitter rules preventing the sale of Twitter accounts, the transaction was completed via a loophole.

I am not really surprised that the state of Israel would want to have this Twitter handle with Twitter’s popularity still high and its huge reach. Looking back a couple of years, however, it does seem strange that Israel would not pay seven figures for something that would seem to be even more important to the country and its tourism industry: Israel.com.

You may recall, Israel.com was up for an auction held by Moniker during TRAFFIC, and the reserve price was reportedly $5,500,000. The domain name did not sell during the live auction, but it was reportedly sold for $5,880,000, according to an article in Israeli newspaper, Haaretz.

Since the Whois information is private and since the domain name is currently parked, it does not appear that the state of Israel was the buyer of this domain name. It’s interesting that the state of Israel would pay a reported 6 figure sum for a Twitter handle, but they weren’t interested in buying Israel.com for $5.5 million when it was up for auction.

Safeguard to Prevent a Domain Theft

12

I was   speaking with a friend at DomainFest yesterday afternoon, and he had just learned a few of his domain names were stolen from his Moniker account. A friend of his saw these stolen names for sale on DN Forum, and fortunately for him, the domain names were quickly returned to his account once Moniker was notified.

One thing my friend mentioned was that he never received an email from Moniker informing him of the account change. With Moniker, I believe the customer doing the transfer has the option to have an email confirmation sent or not once the account change has been completed.

As a safety precaution, I think Moniker (and all registrars) should make these confirmation emails mandatory. They should automatically send the transferor and transferee a confirmation notice upon account change. Had my friend not been told about the thread on DN Forum, his names may have been transferred to a different registrar, and that would have made them more difficult to recover.

Kudos to Moniker for taking quick action on this. Having a responsive account representative like Bari is one of the primary reasons I am a happy customer.

Moniker Auction at Epik Conference

Epik Domain Conference and Auction

Rob Monster and his Epik team will be holding its first Developer Conference in Seattle September 15-17, 2010. You can learn more about the conference on the Epik website. I haven’t decided if I am going to attend, but it looks like it will be a good conference for people who have been developing, and it certainly promises to bring something different to the domain conference scene.

In conjunction with this conference, Moniker will be running a live auction presumably using the Snapnames platform. Epik is now accepting auction submissions, but domain names must meet at least one of the following requirements to be considered:

  • Is a com with an appraised value of $25,000 or more on Appraise.Epik.com
  • Is a .net with an appraised value of $5,000 or more on Appraise.Epik.com
  • Is .co, .co.uk, .tv., info, or ,org with at least 5,000 exact matches
  • Is currently getting at least 100 monthly unique visitors.
  • Is currently earning at least $50 in monthly revenue
  • Is in the top 5 positions on Google for the exact match term.

There will be 100 domain names listed for sale in the live auction, and the silent auction will consist of 200 additional domain names. Adult and trademark domain names will not be considered for inclusion in this auction.

Visit Epik.com for more information about the conference and auction.
