NamesCon Auction This Afternoon

As you’ve likely heard by now, NamesCon will be conducting its first domain name auction later on this afternoon. The auction was organized by Right of the Dot (ROTD), and there is a big focus on the new gTLD domain names. Just about every time I’ve seen ROTD founders Monte Cahn and Mike Berkens at NamesCon, the duo seem to be huddling together over a laptop, most likely working on the auction.

I am most curious to see how the bidding goes on the new gTLD domain names. Although I have heard about many new gTLD sales, most seem to be private and unreported (sidenote, if I ran a new domain name registry, I would prohibit non-disclosure agreements on registry sales). This auction may give more of an indication about the new gTLD aftermarket, although usage of domain names will trump big sales.

There are a variety of domain names from new extensions including

Some of the conference speakers and panelists include the following people:

CircleID Shares Two Sides to the New TLD Discussion

If you don’t regularly read CircleID, you may be missing out on a variety of interesting topics that impact the domain name space, and consequently, domain investors. Yesterday and today, there were two interesting articles posted about the new gTLD domain names that I think you will find interesting.

On Wednesday, Jeannie McPherson, Verisign’s Senior Manager of Corporate Communications, published an article called “The Real Facts About New gTLDs.” In the article, McPherson discussed some of the “troubling trends” related to the new gTLDs. Some of these trends she cited include:

  • drop off in new registrations
  • increase in UDRP and URS filings
  • confusion with similar new extensions
  • free registrations
  • security issues

I thought  McPherson brought up some interesting points, although one should understand that Verisign operates the .com and .net domain name registries.

Today, Paul Stahura, Founder and CEO of

Awareness is a critical aspect in generating new registrations of the domain names.

In the article, it was mentioned that some of the early adopters of .Country domain names are
