Donna Mahony Starts Donna’s Blog

Donna's BlogFor several years, I’ve encouraged Donna Mahony to start a blog, and I am happy to report that Donna’s Blog at DonnasBlog.com is now live. I am sure I didn’t have much to do with Donna’s decision to start blogging, but I am excited that she made the move.

Donna Mahony is founder of Domain Boardroom, a private domain industry discussion forum with about 250 members.  Donna has been involved in the domain industry since 1999, and she knows most of the movers and shakers in the industry. I am sure I don’t really need to give you much more of an introduction.

Donna was kind enough to share two well received blog posts about NamesCon – one prior to attending the conference and a second article after she attended. As you can probably tell by reading those articles, Donna shared some frank thoughts and advice, and I expect more of the same from Donna’s Blog.

Based on a few conversations I’ve had with Donna, I expect that her blog will be filled with

Endurance Completes Acquisition of Directi

Last September, there were reports that publicly traded Endurance International Group had agreed to acquire Directi, a company founded by brothers  Divyank & Bhavin Turakhia. In a press release this evening, Endurance announced that the acquisition has been completed.

According to the release:

“Endurance International Group is pleased to announce that it has completed the acquisition of the web presence business of Directi, which operates India’s leading domain registration business. The acquisition of Directi includes B2B brands ResellerClub, LogicBoxes and webhosting.info as well as successful web presence brand BigRock.”

The press release didn’t announce the

United TLD Rebrands as Rightside Registry

rightside_registry_logoUnited TLD, a division of publicly traded Demand Media (DMD), applied to manage more than 25 new gTLD domain extensions. Yesterday, the company announced that it is rebranding and will now be called Rightside Registry.

As you are likely aware, Demand Media is splitting off its domain companies and assets into a new company called Rightside, which DMD hopes will become publicly traded. A couple of weeks ago, DMD  filed a  Form 10 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission to move this process along.

I do not believe that Rightside Registry will

Merlin Kauffman Making Bitcoin News

Many people in the domain space know of or personally know Merlin Kauffman. My opinion is that Merlin is one of the shrewdest domain investors, and he has done very well with his domain investments. In September, I covered his launch of Soothe, which is sort of like Uber for massage therapy. This week, Merlin has made news for a bitcoin related matter.

According to CoinDesk, an online publication that covers bitcoin and other digital currencies, Merlin Kauffman’s “Las Vegas-based bitcoin investment fund CoinSeed announced a substantial

Francois Carrillo Launches Discretion.com Private Email Service

I admire Domaining.com founder  Francois Carrillo for his determination when it comes to launching new websites with a variety of different business models. According to an email I received this morning, Francois launched a website on  Discretion.com, which is now a private emailing service.

The way it works is that a person visits  Discretion.com and clicks on the “send a message” button on the bottom of the home page. They are then taken to a page where they can fill out a form to send a message to someone, without the recipient knowing who sent the message. The sender can also choose an option to be notified when the message is opened by the recipient.

On the About us page, there is quite a bit of information about the privacy functionality of Discretion.com. The website reports that they don’t save any data except for encrypted messages for 48 hours.  I believe there are

Namecheap Announces Redesigned Website & Logo Update

NamecheapNamecheap is a domain registrar that has a considerable following with enthusiastic client supporters. As Domain Incite reported this morning, Namecheap is also “in the top 10 largest registrars in terms of domains under management, judging by data in regulatory documents filed by eNom parent Rightside.” Namecheap just announced a major website redesign along with an updated logo.

The company sent out an email to clients and press this morning announcing some of the changes, most of which appear to be focused on the design to help make it easier to find and purchase products and services. The website’s responsive design self-optimizes for the user depending on his or her browser type and size. For me, the website is loading very fast, although I can’t really compare it to the previous iteration of the Namecheap website.

According to the company, “It will be easier to purchase services from Namecheap, from domain names, to web hosting programs, to SSL certificates, and more. The process should be faster as well as code has been optimized for an expedited experience.”

I really like the logo change and color scheme. Previously, the Namecheap logo had a yellowish green icon and black logotype. The new logo is a two-toned orange, and the logotype has changed just a bit. Namecheap is now all lowercase and is in a grey font. The company didn’t add the .com to the logo before, and that has carried over to the new logo.

The full press release announcing the update is below. Congratulations to the Namecheap team on this relaunch.

It will be easier to purchase services from Namecheap, from domain names, to web hosting programs, to SSL certificates, and more. The process should be faster as well as code has been optimized for an expedited experience.
