.CO Registry Soon to (Re)Auction 100 High Value Domain Names Held Over from Landrush Launch Phase

October 18, 2011.   Miami, Florida.   The .CO Registry will soon make a number of premium .CO domain names available to interested buyers by holding a (Re)Auction of domain names that have been held over from the company’s original Landrush launch phase, which took place in the Summer of 2010.

The Landrush (Re)Auctions will commence on Monday, October 31st at 12:00 noon and run through Monday, November 7th at 12:00 noon EST.   The (Re)Auctions will be managed by Pool.com (the same company that managed the original Landrush auctions).

Some of the names that will be made available include:

OMG.CO, ASSETS.CO, UNIQUE.CO, ETC.CO, RAD.CO, ACCIDENTLAWYERS.CO, BIGIDEAS.CO, COMICBOOKS.CO, COSMETICDENTIST.CO, DOGFOOD.CO, ENGAGE.CO, FORMS.CO, FUNERALS.CO, HIVE.CO, HUB.CO, INTERACTIVE.CO, INJURYLAWYERS.CO, LAWN.CO, OFFROAD.CO, and NAMASTE.CO

While the original Landrush auctions were “closed” (meaning that you could only participate in the bidding if you had previously applied for the domain name during the Landrush phase); the re-auctions will be “open” to all (meaning that you can participate even if you didn’t apply for the particular domain name during the Landrush).

Interested bidders can find out more information by clicking here.   Bidders are advised to register in advance for the auction and to use the next week to prepare their auction strategy – including making the appropriate business case to business partners and colleagues and ensuring the necessary funds will be available to secure key domain names.

According to Sedo.com, the world’s largest and most well-known domain market, .CO has “become the rising star in the Online Domain Marketplace,” with a robust market of buyers and sellers continuing to evolve.

“With notable recent secondary market sales such as OnlineCasino.CO for $100,000, Business.CO for $80,000, and Music.CO for $30,000, we expect the Landrush (Re)Auctions to create a lot of excitement for individuals and businesses looking to build and extend their brands online,” says Nicolai Bezsonoff, Chief Operating Officer of .CO Internet S.A.S.

Using .CO & .ME Locally

I saw this newspaper dispenser in Portland, Maine this morning and thought of you so I snapped a photo and want to share it. A number of companies in Maine (state abbreviation is ME) are using .ME as if it were its own local ccTLD.

This afternoon, I saw the Name.com video I embedded below, and it makes a similar point, but with a focus on Colorado (state abbreviation is CO).

Because Google allows domain owners who own .CO and .ME domain names to target visitors in the US, it makes sense to some companies in Maine and Colorado to use their states’ respective abbreviations. I won’t be surprised to see New York City businesses using .NYC in the near future.

BTW, one of the things I like about Name.com is their videos. It’s a small company and their weekly videos are great for building the brand and allowing customers to get to know the company. I feel like I know many of the people, even though I haven’t met all of them.

For .CO, Better to Be Talked About Than The Alternative

The only thing more ridiculous than the name of the Raiders’ edifice was how they were more than happy to help the Patriots load this win into their luggage for the trip home.” – Christopher L. Gasper, Boston Globe sports columnist discussing the name of the stadium where the Oakland Raiders play.

As you are well aware, Overstock bought the naming rights to the Oakland Coliseum before the football season, and the company is in the process of a re-branding to O.CO. Consequently, the new name of the stadium is O.CO Coliseum.

I suppose this means Overstock likely has a ways to go before the branding is understood and adopted, but like the saying goes, it’s better to have people talk about you than not say anything.

Google Now Using G.CO on Maps

20

G.COIn July, it was announced that Google acquired G.CO to use as a url shortener for internal Google links. I just noticed that Google has begun using the G.CO url shortener for internal links on its Google Maps pages.

When you enter an address on the map and click on the link button, you’re presented the standard link, which can be VERY long depending on the address. There’s a “Short URL” check box above the standard url, and when it’s clicked, you’re given a url using G.CO.

I haven’t come across other uses of G.CO yet, but I am sure it will take some time for integration within all of Google’s products and brands. With a reported 7 figure price tag, I would hope Google plans to use G.CO more widely across its products and services.

I just came across Google’s LatLong Blog post discussing the url shortener back in August, but I just noticed it. According to the post, “We only use g.co to send you to Google web pages, and only Google Maps can generate a g.co/maps URL. This means that you can visit a a g.co/maps shortcut with confidence, and always know you will end up on a Google Maps page.

Have you seen G.CO used elsewhere?

.CO Registry: “We Are Almost At 70% Renewals for Year One”

30

Last week, I posted a video of an interview with .CO Registry  Chief Operating Officer,  Nicolai Bezsonoff. In the interview, Bezsonoff stated that first year renewals are “fantastic,” although he didn’t quantify this.

In the comment section of that post, .CO Registry VP Lori Anne Wardi posted an update about the renewal rate, stating that .CO is “almost at 70% renewals for year one.” Compared to other renewal #s with which I am familiar, this does seem to be quite strong, especially considering most domain registrars didn’t offer much in the way of concessions in renewal pricing or coupons.

With over one million domain names registered in its first year, a 70% renewal rate is very strong, especially considering that it’s month 14 of .CO, so we’re not just talking about the best keyword .CO domain names that were purchased in the first days of .CO availability.

I think this shows the viability of .CO domain names and it also shows that there is considerable money to be made on the registry side of the business when new gTLDs are introduced to the public.

.CO Update with COO of the .CO Registry

If you have an interest in .CO domain names and the .CO Registry, you’ll want to watch eNom’s VP of Business Development,  Chris Sheridan, interview  Nicolai Bezsonoff, COO of the .CO Registry. The video isn’t too long, but it gives an update on the state of the .CO Registry, its marketing efforts, .CO adoption, and building the .CO brand.
