Go Daddy Listened to My Suggestion

13

Yesterday morning, I shared GoDaddy’s .CO Super Bowl commercial with you. I think it’s a great commercial that has some humor and clearly illustrates why people should visit their website to register a domain name.

Some people will go straight to the GoDaddy website after seeing the commercial, but many will go to the call to action url featured in the commercial,  YourBigIdea.CO. It is, after all, a .CO Registry co-branded commercial.

In my post yesterday, I suggested that Go Daddy should add the option for its Domain Buy Service when someone looks up a domain name that is already owned and is unavailable to hand register. Previously, they only had the backorder service option listed, which doesn’t do much good for domain owners.

According to a follow-up comment by Go Daddy’s Paul Nicks and confirmed by me, Go Daddy has added the option to the search screen. If someone wants a domain name that is privately owned, they will see the option to pay to try and privately acquire the domain name. I think this is going to generate revenue for Go Daddy, and hopefully it will translate into aftermarket sales for domain investors.

If you receive an offer from GoDaddy’s Domain Buy Service during the Super Bowl or shortly after, I’d love to hear about it. Hopefully, I will receive an inquiry!

2013 Go Daddy .CO Super Bowl Commercial

17

Go Daddy released its 2013 .CO Super Bowl commercial, and I think it’s pretty solid. The commercial is called YourBigIdea.CO, and I think it will resonate with anyone that has had a business idea but put it off for another day.

It’s not a “sexy” commercial, but it’s funny and it will most likely drive boost sales considerably.

One thing I would have like to seen on the YourBigIdea.CO website (well, the Go Daddy website after you search for a .CO domain name) is the ability to try and acquire a domain name that isn’t available. There is a message that says they can “help you get it” but that’s only for backordering. It would be neat if they offered their Domain Buy Service there, too.

Update: Go Daddy added it.

What do you think of the commercial and website?

.CO Auction Results from Sedo

11

The .CO startup auction at Sedo  ended a week ago, and the sale generated about $55,000. Home.CO was the highest value sale, closing at just under $25k, followed by Hot.CO at $10k.

I spoke with a representative from Sedo about the auction, and he told me that over $60,000 in bids were received on domain names that did not meet the reserve price. The company currently has domain brokers working to close many of these. Assuming the bids are legit, there will likely be additional closed deals since the .CO Registry owns the listed domain names.

With that in mind, if you saw a name you liked but thought it wasn’t fairly priced, you should get in touch with a broker from Sedo (maybe Dave Evanson) to try and work out a deal with the Registry.

.CO auction results:

home.co 24999 $US
hot.co 10000 $US
fwd.co 4905 $US
exit.co 2050 $US
astrology.co 2000 $US
demo.co 1600 $US
mvp.co 1500 $US
kind.co 1050 $US
comm.co 1013 $US

Sedo’s .CO Auction for Startups Closing

The .CO Registry is running a special auction targeting start up companies as part of  Global Entrepreneur Week. According to the auction announcement, “the domain names selected for the auction are all short, unique and memorable, with high branding potential for those seeking to launch or grow their business, brand, product or service online.”

The auctions begin closing at noon (eastern) today, and the reserve prices range from $500-999 to $10,000-$24,999. Out of the 164 domain names in the auction, 67 of them have bids, although most seem to be below reserve at the moment.

My 5 favorite domain names (based on the target startup audience):

Sell Your “gTLD” Domain Names

113

People love it when they have the opportunity to sell their domain names, and I am going to give you that opportunity today. I welcome you to list your non-.com “gTLD” domain names for sale in the comment section. Be sure to include your price and your contact information.

You’ll notice that I have gTLD in quotes. The reason is that I am offering up the space for you to sell domain names like .CO, .ME, .TV, .and XXX. While some are actually ccTLD domain names, people use them as if they were gTLDs.

When you list your domain names for sale here, keep a couple of things in mind. First, most of the people who read this post are domain investors rather than end user buyers, so price your domain names accordingly. Second, keep your list brief. Although I am not a buyer of these types of domain names, if I was reading the names to buy and saw a list of 10 or 20+ names, I would likely skip over the list and move on to the next one.

Just as a small disclaimer, I am not going to get involved in any of the transactions. I recommend using Escrow.com to complete your sales to ensure a safe transaction.

.CO Seeing “Strong” Renewal Rate

59

Since the launch of .CO, there has been quite a bit of chatter about how people who registered or who bought .CO domain names in the aftermarket would drop them after a year or two.

There were primarily two reasons cited for this assumption. The first thought was that these .CO domain names wouldn’t retain their value and wouldn’t even be worth keeping or renewing. Secondly, naysayers assumed that people who registered their .CO domain names with discount codes wouldn’t get the same deal on renewals and would drop them.

According to a blog post from the .CO Registry’s Nicolai Bezsonoff, this assumption of a low renewal rate is inaccurate and the opposite appears to be happening:
