Vote: Hand Registration Contest

The hand registration contest was held last week, and due to the holidays, only 7 domain investors were able to participate. Please review the 7 lists of 10 domain names each, and vote for the list you think is “best.” Although “best” is somewhat subjective, I would define “best” as the most valuable and saleable.

Voting is open through Friday, January 10 at around 11:00pm EST (or when I shut it down around then). I will announce the winner on Monday and will include a screenshot of the poll results for verification. There is no prize for this contest other than personal pride.

  1. I thought list 3 was by far the easiest list to find end user buyers who would quickly understand the value to them if they owned the domains to use in their business.

Suggestion: Have a contest where each list owner now try to sell their domains over the next 60 days and report back the number of domains sold and the total money received for those names.

    • Great suggestion.

Once the contest is over, I am going to try to sell the names I hand registered. I’ll probably wait until the 60 day ICANN-required lock is removed so there aren’t transfer issues.

    • Wonderful idea dimester.

I like the idea to continue the competition until the domains are sold.

But the market would be different today to say 1 yr from today. Someone might not want a domain name listed above today but would be willing to buy in the future when things change for them.

Maybe a 1 year look back after a year would be nice.

    • Once sold, just push them to the end users registrar account. If they dont have one, have them open one. If they want to transfer, they’ll wait… I do it everyday.

  2. It was a tough call for me between 3/5/7 but I went with 7. I thought lists 4 and 6 were failures, and 1 and 2 were decent but nothing really jumped out at me.

Are you going to reveal who submitted each list once the voting is over, or just say who the winner was?

    • I don’t hand-register names and there reason can’t be more obvious. There’s like 1-2 in each list I’d say are decent. I’m not sure why people would double down on plural/singular stuff though . I gotta admint Coinalingus.com cracked me up though

  3. Based on overall performance of bought domains (IMHO) I like the most the set #7 and then #5. Others have less potential to be sold or be developed in something bigger than mini site.

    • Who are big players, they are big players because they own one word .com’s etc… they are in the same boat when it comes to hand reg’s, you have a brain, and millions of search tools, use them…

  4. Hot off the press from CES 2014!

    FoldableTech.com

    2Ksmartphone(s).com

    InternetOfSex.com

    DigitallyManufactured.com

    3Dprintered.com

  5. I commend you all, hand registering domains is tricky business, I can’t do it. I have not voted yet because I am still trying to decide but I will say I had no idea BowelTransplants.com were something, I had to go look them up, apparently intestinal transplantation happens, what a fun site for development.

For a comparison I thought I would list the 6 names I got in the one day Sherpa Challenge for $180, that is what kind of started these name games:

    AboutCraps.com
    SolarGlassWindows.com
    EnhancePotency.com
    WestCoastBrew.com
    NewFarming.com
    Reunion.me

Also I have already received a $200 offer on one of these domains, I won’t be selling it for that and it doesn’t look like I will be getting a higher offer from this party but that sale could pay for all these domains for this year anyway. Happy Hunting…

  6. Cheers and Good Luck to the other six participants!!!… I already want to buy some of their domains so I won’t have to hand register for awhile………….Again, Good luck y’all!

  7. Just got some:

    DNLeader.com
    DNBrief.com
    DNBulletin.com
    DNChronicle.com
    DNCitizen.com
    DNDiscovery.com
    DNExaminer.com
    DNInquirer.com
    DNVisionary.com
    DNVoice.com

  8. I like 2 and 3. I tried to see how hard it was to come up with some good names and it only took me a couple of hours to come up with these that I just hand registered tonight. Tried to keep it simple by just looking at GEO’s.

    MiamiEngineer.com
    DenverOptician.com
    BostonNeurologist.com
    PhiladelphiaCouriers.com
    DetroitPsychiatrist.com
    LasVegasGynecology.com

All are major U.S. markets and only cost me less than 18 bucks total with Godaddy coupons. LOL

    • Agree with Mark, if Todd’s list were in the contest, it would get my vote.

Are you the same Todd that agreed with me about sale.com going for too cheap?

    • Thanks Mark and Tony and yes I am the one that agreed with you on sale.com. I wanted to be in this contest but names are hard enough to sell and having to put privacy on them would have made it even harder so I decided not to join the contest.
I will come up with 4 more so I have an even 10 like everyone else.

    • Here is my top 10 list registered last night and today. Total time less than 4 hours at a total cost of less than 30 bucks.

      MiamiEngineer.com
      DenverOptician.com
      BostonNeurologist.com
      PhiladelphiaCouriers.com
      DetroitPsychiatrist.com
      LasVegasGynecology.com
      LAbodyguards.com
      SanAntonioOrthodontics.com
      MemphisTherapist.com
      ChicagoNeurosurgeon.com

  9. Like VisitMainland.com list 5. Sounds like visit Mainland China!

    8bit8.com
    Bit4Us.com
    Bits247.com
    BitcoinFinanceNews.com
    BitcoiningNews.com
    BreakingNewsBitcoin.com
    BreakingBitcoinNews.com

  10. Hi all!

    NEONMODEL.COM
    RELEASEMIX.COM
    SEPARATEHOME.COM
    SPORTINGHILL.COM
    TRADERSSQUARE.COM

  11. I voted for list 3.

I don’t hand register many domains anymore but in 2013 I picked up the following:

    UltraParanoidComputing.com
    LithiumBolivia.com
    BritishBeerFestivals.com
    GermanBeerFestivals.com
    BelgianBeerFestivals.com

  12. I’ve voted 🙂

Some of the better domains form all listings no particular order:
    BannedIPs.com
    OrganRejection.com
    DateMommy.com
    TransplantMedications.com
    WifiServers.com
    RiskVerification.com
    BulkWhoisSearches.com
    MedicalSchoolTutoring.com

    MHO

  13. of the 70 there is only one or two that i would consider buying:

    friendsdontletfriendsdrivedrunk.com

and the santa clara and green bay doctors from list 3

this is an example of what is wrong with the domain market, would be investors buying and selling useless domains to each others, like a game of old maid where the one left holding the baby is the loser.

if there isn’t any end user value then the only value is investor trading, when the last trade is made there is no value just a loss.

    • This was a contest where people had to register 10 names. As such, I do not believe it is any type of indicator of an issue within the domain market. Perhaps an issue exists, but this contest wouldn’t be a good example to illustrate your concern.

Personally, I probably hand register fewer than 25 domain names per year because I don’t think there is much money in that channel. This was a fun challenge for me and got me thinking about something different. There’s a massive difference between researching unregistered domain names and negotiating / bidding on higher value names that definitely have aftermarket value.

    • What you are referring to is not the domain market. I don’t buy and especially I never sell to domainers.
I only sell to end users.
The 10 domains I bought I would have bought them anyway. I didn’t waste any of my money for this contest. And I only plan to sell to end users.

I would like to comment on a few domains but since I am part of the contest I will not until the voting is over.

  14. I promised myself after reading to not look at the comments below to sway my own legitimate response. Seems many were across the board on on 1,2,3,5,7. Which is good though since it should probably be a competition and not a slaughter… although, one does always like to see a Seabiscuit.

However, there were only seven (7) and with ten (10) there may have been even more variance voting.

The problem with these votes however is that many domainers who really do not have experience are making votes on what they believe and 5 inexperience green newby’s or unsuccessful domainers can sway a win or second place. This leads many of your followers who read for education to believe something false. IMHO.

It is my suggestion that you Elliot, provide the poll results and then your pick and reason and this will provide better insight as to why, coming from a respected, experienced domainer.

Great fun and learning experience for many. Congrats on the extending the idea and initial credit to Michael Cyger whose DomainSherpa is also a 1 out of my only 3 domain blog favorites.

    • As I mentioned in the initial post, I got the idea for the contest from Mark of DomainPicks.com, and he said it was cool for me to go ahead with it. Just giving credit where credit is due. I think DomainSherpa has some excellent interviews and I think he asks very good questions.

I am not going to give my pick because I am obviously biased towards my list. I might offer commentary on what other names I liked though. It’s tough to give valuable feedback because frankly, none of these names compares to what I generally buy in the aftermarket and it’s tough for me to fawn over hand registered names.

This was a fun contest to see who can grab the 10 best names. I don’t necessarily think it’s any type of educational experience, aside from the fact that there are still some decent saleable names available to hand register. None of these names may sell for big $$$, but I do think several are worth much more than the registration fee – perhaps 4 figures.

    • Yes, dont want to skip credit due. re:”I got the idea for the contest from Mark of DomainPicks.com”

re:”I don’t necessarily think it’s any type of educational experience” I would however disagree. Reason being many learn from due diligence, studies, and from professiojnal or expert/reading such mainstream domainer blogs. Meaning results of the contest (all-be-it results of other domainers) still carry responsibility to your followers to supply your expert honest opinion of those results.

I dont think you run the risk of being biased if you found your list to be better, as you may choose another’s list…again, imo.

Great fun either way-and thanks for the response!

    WeedTheory.com
    WorldNetWorth.com
    WTFBrowser.com
    YourCarManual.com

Not all for resale, some going to be used for actual websites. Some I was just drunk.. like when registering MileySucks.com and MileyCyrusSucks.com….

  16. List 6 definitely! EverybodyKnowsThat.com love it. Could be a hilarious site. Would have chosen DontHateThePlayaHateTheGame.com but that’s a good one too. Mindsnuggle great brand if you find the right buyer too. Brands are the way to go with .com now that all gTLD hell is gonna break loose.

My latest hand reg’s the past few days. All were previously reg’d. The good ones are out there if you put your mind to it.

    TitsForTats.com (my personal favorite now)
    DialADrunk.com
    1800ASSHOLE.com
    TatRats.com
    WrongFuck.com
    HotMamaz.com
    BabyMamaz.com
    MyCatsHateMe.com

  17. Date Mommy? – Yes please!
    Coinalingus? – What’s that, I want one.

List #2 Wins IMHO. Almost all 2-word combos, but lots of creativity and interesting on almost every one.

  18. Voted!. Apologies again for not being able to participate while being one of the 10 shortlisted participants. Good effort from those who did participated although i’m a bit disappointed to only see lists of keyword domains. Would had been nice to see at least one domainer going for brandables.

  19. Choosing amongst lists that are more or less equal in quality is an invidious responsibility. It’s like that old chestnut on dating site questionnaires – what is your favorite book. After the first 1,000 books one has read, who the heck knows which one is the favorite – there might be dozens (like FIVE FINGERS by Gayle Rivers [with a ghost writer] – arguably the best book ever written on special forces ops)

The bottom line is that there are some amazingly good names here – atlantatraveler.com is just one of several that looks pretty good at a registration price of $9/10 or whatever. Congratulations.

    Carl

  20. @Elliot Silver re:Just a brief update

It’s going to be a close call indeed!

I haven’t hand regged in a while (I profit more from aftermarket to aftermarket arbitrage)

These are my last most recent handreg, no particular order on reg times,

    Createables.com
    BloggingCart.com
    ArticleBot.net
    Yelps.org (Sold $130)
    Arc.cc (sold $450)

Each one has a business idea behind them, it’s just a matter of time until I’m able to launch some of them, if not all.

    😀
