ICA Seeking Nominees for 2018 Lonnie Borck Memorial Award

Last year, the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) honored the memory of Lonnie Borck by naming an industry award in his memory. The Lonnie Borck Memorial Award is given each year to recognize an individual or organization for extraordinary efforts in championing the rights of domain name owners. The inaugural recipient in 2017 was David Weslow of Wiley Rein.

This year, the ICA is opening up the nomination process to the entire domain name industry. Domain investors and others who are active in the business of domain investing are invited to submit a nomination.  The ICA Leadership team will create a committee to review the nominations and the committee will select 3 nominees. ICA members will be polled to select the winner of the award from the nominees.

If you know someone who you believe is deserving of the award, please submit a nomination. Submissions should (more…) → Read More

Join The ICA for an Exclusive Dinner at NamesCon

Foundation Room

There are just a handful of tickets left for the Internet Commerce Association's exclusive dinner at NamesCon. The dinner is on Monday, January 23, at The Foundation Room at the House of Blues, located in the Mandalay Bay Hotel. It starts at 6:45 pm, before Uniregistry's After Hours Party at Hakkasan nightclub, at the MGM.  The Foundation Room looks like a pretty incredible place and there will be lots of good food and an open bar.

The Internet Commerce Association is the lobby and industry association for the Domain Name investment community. Only 100 tickets were available, and ICA members were offered them first, but non-members can still get the remaining handful of tickets by signing up and paying the ticket price of $100, here via EventBrite.

Moreover, anyone who joins the ICA from now until the dinner, will get the dinner entirely for free, subject to ticket availability. Just contact the ICA's Operations Manager, Kamila Sekiewicz to make arrangements, or join the ICA as a member and the ICA will contact you.

Daniel Law Named Interim ICA Executive Director

internet-commerce-association-icaI just received an email from the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) announcing that Daniel Law, a co founder of Rook Media, and currently a principle with Heron Investments Ltd., is taking on the position as Executive Director of the trade organization on an interim basis. Previously, the ICA had been operating without an Executive Director.

As ICA membership and the organization's responsibilities have grown, this position has become increasingly important to fill.

Daniel will serve beside Philip Corwin, who has been the Counsel for the ICA for many years. In that role, Phil is responsible for lobbying on behalf of the ICA and helping to develop public positions and policies on behalf of the ICA. Daniel will also work closely with domain industry veteran Kamila Sekiewicz who serves as the ICA's Operations Manager.

"The ICA is fortunate that Daniel is willing to take on this role, as he brings a combination of high level management expertise, in depth knowledge of the industry, dedication to the ICA's mission and → Read More

ICANN Seeking Volunteers for UDRP Review Working Group

ICANN sent out a news alert yesterday calling for volunteers to participate on a new working group that will be created to "Review all Rights Protections Mechanisms in all generic top-level domains." Among other things, this working group will be tasked with potentially overhauling the UDRP and URS procedures. This could have major ramifications for domain investors and domain name portfolio operators.

A week ago, Phil Corwin from the Internet Commerce Association wrote an article on CircleID about the importance of this working group and the impact its findings and recommendations may have on domain owners and domain investors. Phil also published an informative blog post about the working group on the ICA's website. You should read both of these articles to get a better idea of why members of the domain investment community should consider participating on this working group.

Phil also commented to me about the importance in having solid representation among domain investors within this working group:

Why I Joined the ICA Yesterday

Yesterday afternoon, Nat Cohen explained why the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) adopted a lower tier for individual memberships. I had not attended the ICA event at NamesCon in Las Vegas, and this was the first time I had learned about the lower cost to join the ICA.

After reading Nat's article, I signed up to join the ICA and paid the $600 membership fee.  Now that I am once again a member of the ICA, I want to share the reasons why I decided to join on behalf of my company, Top Notch Domains, LLC.

The main reason is that I think the ICA does important work on behalf of domain name owners, especially people who own portfolios of domain names. When there are issues that pose threats to domain owners, Phil Corwin, the ICA's counsel, takes action to protect the interests of domain owners. I understand that sometimes involves lobbying and it sometimes involves spreading the news about something that could be harmful to our business. I think this is important work done on behalf of all of us, and it costs quite a bit of money → Read More

ICA Now Offering Less Expensive Individual Memberships

Participation in the Internet Commerce Association should be accessible and affordable to all who have an interest in joining.   The ICA is a member-led organization that advocates on behalf of the domain industry.   The greater the participation and involvement of members of the domain industry in the ICA, the more effective we can be.

With the aim of making the ICA more accessible to all members of the domain industry, during the "ICA Live" session at NamesCon the ICA announced a new membership level for Individual Members.   The Individual Membership level is $50 per month or $600 per year.   Those who wish to join as Individual Members can do so now  on the Join page of the ICA website  through either an annual or monthly PayPal subscription.

Individual members are full members of the ICA, receiving the same (more…) → Read More
