This morning, Namecheap and Spaceship Founder and CEO Richard Kirkendall announced a free Whois history tool that is available on Spaceship.com. Users don’t need to be logged into their Spaceship account – or even Spaceship customers – to access this free tool.
Richard shared a video demonstration of how it works in a post via X:
New feature preview in hidden mode: “Whois+” full whois history dating back to 2011 integrated directly into our search at Spaceship. 100% free. pic.twitter.com/t7QBatCBES

Spaceship has historical Whois records dating back to 2011. Domain names have different numbers of archived Whois records.
In addition to being able to see who owns a domain name, you can also see the email address of the registrant and former registrants. This can be helpful if a user would like to make a purchase inquiry to buy a domain name or contact a registrant to discuss infringement when the current Whois record is private. This is particularly useful with some domain registrars adding privacy by default.
I have used DomainTools for its Whois History tool, and I have also used DomainIQ (both of these are paid tools, but I am given free access to some of DomainTools’ tools with a journalist account). Because all three of these platforms have different ways of collecting Whois information, they may each have different historical Whois records dates that could reveal additional information.
It does not look like this tool is available to access via the homepage search box, so Richard shared a link that can be used to access the Spaceship Whois history data:
