Neustar to Continue Operating .US Extension

According to a press release I received today, Neustar has been awarded the contract to continue operating the .US ccTLD extension. The contract was awarded by the US Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), and the contract length is for up to ten years. There are over 2 million .US domain names currently registered.

Here’s what the NTIA posted on its website a short while ago:

“Today, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration announced it awarded to Neustar a contract to continue operating the .us registry for 10 years, at no cost to the federal government. The new contract was awarded on June 28, 2019, with a period of performance beginning on August 29, 2019. The .us registry is the official country code domain of the United States and has over two million domain names under management. The usTLD has historically served as a home for American business, individuals, and localities and is managed on behalf of the U.S. government through a contract overseen by NTIA.”

You can have a look at the contract on the NTIA website if you would like.

This is good news for Neustar, as the contract was up for competitive bid. The company has operated the .US registry since 2001. The press release I received is published below:

Neustar Selected to Continue Operating .US Top-Level Domain

STERLING, Va. – July 17, 2019 – Neustar®, Inc., a trusted, neutral provider of real-time information services, today announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has awarded the company the contract to continue operating the .US Top Level Domain (.US), the official country code domain of the United States, for up to 10 years, until 2029.

Neustar has successfully administered this critical internet infrastructure since 2001, when the Department of Commerce selected the company to launch and manage the .US domain. Like the United States itself, .US was built on the ideals of innovation and inclusion. Among the world’s most stable and secure domains, .US is the web address of choice for anyone with a dream to chase, idea to share, cause to champion, or business to promote. With more than two million domain names under management, .US will continue to be supported by Neustar’s award-winning infrastructure, team and experience, which is continually advancing from ongoing investment and product innovation.

“We are honored to continue our long-standing partnership with the NTIA, ensuring a high level of business confidence and continuity of stable, secure service for millions of .US stakeholders,” said Nicolai Bezsonoff, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Neustar’s Registry Solutions business unit. “We are committed to ensuring that the .US namespace continues to have the industry’s most robust infrastructure and cybersecurity defense, including the highest levels of performance, resilience and capacity. We will also continue to work closely with government and law enforcement agencies to combat domain abuse, such as phishing and the sale of illegal opioids online.”

Neustar is one of the world’s largest global registry providers, with industry-leading DNS services, DDoS mitigation and IP Intelligence capabilities. In addition to .US, Neustar serves as the registry partner of choice for Colombia’s .CO domain, India’s .IN domain and New York City’s .NYC domain, and provides registry and DNS services to hundreds of other top-level domains for countries, cities and world leading brands. Neustar continues to invest heavily to ensure its infrastructure stays ahead of the fast-changing demands of the internet, including multimillion dollar investments to build the largest DDoS mitigation platform in the world, featuring SiteProtect Next Generation, which has 11.8 Tbps of scrubbing capacity, and continual investment to enhance its global DNS constellation of 30 nodes.

“Neustar and the NTIA have had a long and rich partnership, building and growing the .US domain into an industry leader,” said Neustar President and CEO Charlie Gottdiener. “With this contract award, Neustar will proudly continue to provide exceptional service that strengthens and grows the legacy of the .US namespace as an engine for economic growth and innovation.”

  1. Oh – what a surprise.

Well I for one think ten more years of establishment status quo on this is cause for celebration. This interesting blog post reminds me of these great public service items that probably not many American know about or have seen:

    Major LOLs on that, Elliot.

    • Re the YouTube link above, is that a bug or did you change the setting for allowing the video graphic to appear? Always liked and preferred the embedded video images.

    • “Mistake” implies trying, wanting or intending for something else, and you really need to rethink that. Also, it’s “imho.”
