NamesCon Sponsor Spotlight on ThreatWave

NamesCon 2017 promises to be the biggest one yet! In less than two weeks, people from all parts of the domain community will converge on Las Vegas for NamesCon. The conference is being held at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from January 22-25. Conference tickets are still available to purchase.

We are running this interview series to introduce attendees to NamesCon sponsors. Today’s Spotlight interview is with Tom Bartel, CEO and Co-Founder of ThreatWave.

What is your company’s mandate; what sets you apart?

ThreatWave pioneered MX parking and monetization. We capture the email traffic sent to parked and unused domains and package that data to support the needs of data researchers working within the security, marketing and reputation industries. Through our data marketplace, we compensate domain owners for the valuable traffic that can be used to better the internet.

Who benefits from your product or service?

Domain owners, domain investors, registries, and parking companies benefit from additional revenue for their domains as we extract useful data from the noise. Through the power of aggregation and managing millions of domains, the combined dataset helps the threat research community make the internet safer for everyone.

What factors have contributed to your company’s growth and success?

We have worked hard over 2016 to evolve our intake and parsing engine. Email traffic to parked domains is exceptionally noisy by default. We have had to solve that for both our domain partners and consumers.

What’s the story behind how your company was founded?

ThreatWave’s founders are long-time email experts – focused on building mail systems and managing email data. After a chance meeting with a domain owner, they investigated opportunities with email being sent to parked domains. From that, a unique MX monetization offering for domainers emerged leveraging a previously unused asset (email traffic).

How would you define your company strategy and vision?

Our mission is to create a safe and trustworthy internet experience for all users. Our vision is to achieve this by providing comprehensive, actionable and real time data to feed the world’s analytic machines. By sourcing and provisioning data, we aim to help others identify, optimize and protect users, networks and devices. We do this through our Email Data Market – connecting email from parked domains to data consumers.

What major milestones has your company accomplished?

We manage MX records for millions of domains, processing terabytes of data daily – we put the BIG in big data.

How will your company engage attendees at the upcoming NamesCon?

Besides our team roaming the conference floor, we will be part of the Ask an Expert series, talking about MX monetization!

How has (or will) NamesCon helped your company achieve its goals?

It is a tremendous opportunity to understand the latest happenings and issues in the domain industry, as well as connect with our partners and gain new ones. There is nothing like NamesCon to learn and meet up with great folks!

What are your thoughts on the new TLDs?

New TLDs are a great expansion opportunity for the domain community providing new opportunities for businesses! With security being a focus for us, we have launched a service that monitors what is coming in/out of TLDs so that their operators can manage potential abuse quickly and efficiently.

What are you most looking forward to at the upcoming conference?

Namescon provides great content and also hosts great events and parties – which are both fun and provide an easy atmosphere to be with our partners. And we are thrilled to be part of the Ask an Expert sessions.

Where can attendees find out more about your company, product or services while at NamesCon?

We would love to talk to you! You can find out more at ThreatWave.com/domains and we can’t to meet in person and talk to you about MX monetization.

If you have a company representative speaking at NamesCon, is there anything you can share about what to expect during your session or keynote?

Tom Bartel, CEO, will be speaking at a Ask an Expert session, speaking about MX parking and monetization. He will be sharing what we have learned to provide a valuable market for both domain owners and data consumers.
