I was looking through the list of auctions on Namecheap this morning, and the number of one word .app domain names caught my attention. From the looks of it, I think these may be expiry auctions, but my confidence level in that observation is not very high and I did not do an exhaustive search.
A handful of the .app domain names that stand out to me based on the number of TLDs registered are:
- Turbo.app
- Utopia.app
- Phase.app
- Cable.app
- Background.app
One thing to note is the additional fee on some of these domain names is quite high. For example, Turbo.app, which currently has a high bid of $17, will have an additional fee of $558.60 added on at the end of the auction. I believe the higher cost is because the .app registry charges a premium renewal fee. Other domain names, like Cage.app, have an additional fee of $22.98. Always take the additional fee into consideration when bidding on any auction at any platform.

If you visit Nic.app, you will be forwarded to Registry.Google, indicating that Google operates the .app registry. When the extension first launched, I recall people mention this as a selling point for .app domain names. I doubt this really matters much for anything though.
I don’t recall seeing so many one word .app domain names coming up for auction at one time. I have a very small handful of .app domain names and would likely have had an interest in some of the better names had the additional fee not been so high.
