The Abaco Islands in the Bahamas are a beautiful destination. As you may know, the Abacos are currently being battered by the category 5 Hurricane Dorian. The damage being done is reportedly catastrophic.
I was curious to see how Abacos.com was being used. At the present time, the registrant does not have an active website on Abacos.com. Instead, there is the standard GoDaddy landing page. As is typical with the GoDaddy landers, there is some advertising, including a “SPECIAL OFFER” banner at the top of the landing page:
Interestingly, it looks like the landing page style may change depending on the browser and possibly cookies and caching:
I think it would be great if GoDaddy would get rid of the “special offer” messaging across the top and replace it with a message about helping people in the Abacos recover from the Hurricane. Perhaps GoDaddy could add a temporary link to the Red Cross website or to another organization that will help with the recovery efforts. People might not love the idea of GoDaddy adding links to landing pages on privately owned domain names, but the company already does it with internal advertising.
I have no idea how much traffic a domain name like Abacos.com gets, but I bet the traffic is growing with the Hurricane placing the islands front and center in the minds of people watching the news. It would be great if GoDaddy was able to replace its advertising with some messaging to assist the people with their recovery efforts.
Great suggestion Elliot.
I was thinking along the same lines and am waiting for new nameservers to propagate to redirect a couple of Bahamas geo domains to the Bahamas Red Cross https://bahamasredcross.org/
