Poll: .Vegas vs. .NYC

I had a discussion with a friend about the .Vegas and .NYC new gTLD extensions, and we debated about which extension we prefer – .Vegas or .NYC. I won’t reveal which extension I like more, but I am curious about which extension you prefer. Personally, I think the geographic new gTLDs are going to be among the top performers of all new gTLD extensions.

One thing that is unique about these two extensions is that neither .Vegas or .NYC are the full name of their respective cities, Las Vegas and New York City. The .NYC landrush began on August 4, and the .Vegas landrush began today, August 14. .NYC domain names have a residency restriction and .Vegas domain names do not require registrants to have a presence in Las Vegas.

Would .Mtl Be a Mistake?

The Gazette, a Montreal-based newspaper, published an article about the possibility that the city of Montreal would apply for its own new gTLD extension. The article indicates that .Mtl would be the extension the city would apply for, and I tend to agree with Christopher Hofman Laursen of the European Domain Centre, who believes this application would be a mistake.

I like geographic new gTLD extensions, and I believe many have a great shot of being successful (both in terms of

Media Options Acquires g.Holdings

logoAndrew Rosener of Media Options has agreed to acquire the g.Holdings domain name from my company for $1,250. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t report a domain name sale publicly, but this one is for a great cause.

All proceeds from the sale of this domain name have been donated to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as a part of my Pan-Mass Challenge fundraising drive. Andrew’s company gets a domain name with great potential, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute gets a four figure donation. That’s what I call a win-win situation.

GoDaddy Testing Not Promoting .com on Home Page

It appears that GoDaddy may be testing out not promoting .com domain names on its GoDaddy.com home page. First spotted in a tweet by George Kirikos yesterday, it appears that GoDaddy is continuing to test not promoting .com domain names, which seems unusual to me considering the vast majority of domain buyers are looking to buy .coms.

Here’s a look at the GoDaddy.com home page that I see:

The New gTLD Domain Name Value Issue

7

In a tweet a little over a week ago, Christopher Hofman Laursen  of the European Domain Centre said, “Domainers don’t understand new gTLDs. Demand for .com relies on scarcity. No one can control the supply of #newgtlds.” He linked to an article he published on LinkedIn, and I think it’s worth a read when you have a moment.

For me, I haven’t bought many new gTLD domain names, but it’s not because I don’t understand them. My primary issue is that I don’t see how I can invest in them adequately to get a large enough expected return on my investment. At this point in time, I believe I am better off spending $1,000 or $10,000 on a .com domain name than I would be hand registering the equivalent amount of new gTLD domain names.

With the new gTLD domain names, there is

Better Business Bureau Asks Members About .BBB

The  Better Business Bureau (BBB) applied to manage the .BBB new gTLD extension. According to an article about the application on the BBB website, the reason the organization applied for this extension is that “A new .bbb domain would create an online community of trusted businesses and charities that would be required to adhere to the highest levels of customer service, security, privacy and transparency.”

I received an email from Rob Sequin, and he let me know about a survey that was apparently sent to members to query them about .BBB domain names. The two question survey asks:
