Should I Buy 50,000 .XYZ Domain Names?

0

As you have probably heard by now, Uniregistry is selling .XYZ registrations for $.01/each for the first year. I saw this tweet from Frank Schilling and it got me thinking:

I could buy 50,000 .XYZ domain names for just $500. I could make sure that auto-renew is off so I don’t accidentally pay full price next year to renew them. I could then list them on Uniregistry Market with $500 BIN prices and see if any of them sell. Even if just one of these domain names sells in the next year, I would break even. If more than one name sells, it would be a profitable endeavor.

Essentially, doing this would be a gamble. Although $500 isn’t much risk for me considering my enjoyment of blackjack, there are other risks and costs to consider:

.XYZ Planning “biggest sale the domain world has ever seen”

I saw the tweet below from .XYZ CEO Daniel Negari, and I reached out to him to see if he could share what he has planned for the company’s anniversary. From the looks of it, we are going to hear a lot about .XYZ domain names via domain name registrar channels and perhaps other outlets.

Here’s what Daniel told me after  I

PornHub Launches BangFit on New gTLD Domain Name

According to an article on TechCrunch, “PornHub is launching a new fitness system (wearable + workout videos) called BangFit.” From a domain name perspective, the most interesting aspect of the article is the domain name that Porn Hub chose for its BangFit product.

Instead of using  the exact match BangFit.com, which is listed for sale on HugeDomains.com, the company is using the new gTLD Bang.Fit. In addition, if you navigate through the site, you will see that participants are also directed to “GO TO BANGFIT.MOBI ON YOUR SMARTPHONE.”

The .Fit domain name extension is

Canon.com Now Redirects to Global.Canon

One of the big questions regarding brands that use their branded new gTLD extension is what the company will choose for the left of the dot. It looks like Canon recently made the decision to use its .Canon extension, and company management decided on Global.Canon for the company home page. The company uses the Canon Global logo without any extension, so it does not look like rebranding was necessary.

Previously, the company used Canon.com, and if you visit Canon.com right now, you will be redirected to Global.Canon. Assuming the redirects were done correctly, I would imagine this redirect should help the company to maintain its search engine rankings.

Here’s what the company wrote about the url change and about the .Canon extension:

Rob Gronkowski Announces Madden Cover on GronkNation.news

It’s not secret that I am a big New England Patriots fan. Obviously, that makes me a Rob Gronkowski fan, too. Any time I can write a domain industry article that mentions one of my favorite players (and one of the best players in the entire NFL), you better believe I will.

It was just announced that Rob Gronkowski will be on the cover of the popular Madden 17 football game. In fact, Rob mentioned this honor via his Twitter account yesterday evening:

As someone in the domain space, what I immediately noticed was

WordPress Could Make .Blog Domain Names Very Popular

0

I believe WordPress is the largest content management system  used by millions of websites, including this one. Many websites that operate using WordPress are blogs of all sizes. Blog operators will be the target audience for .Blog domain names, and WordPress will be promoting .Blog domain names. This could make them very popular.

According to a blog post on the WordPress corporate blog this morning, the parent company of WordPress (Automattic) “secured the rights to oversee and operate the sale and registration of .blog domains, a new and never-before available top-level domain.”

Quite some time ago, CNN published a list of all new gTLD extensions that were applied for along with the applicants. There were 9 applicants for the .Blog extension, and apparently the entity related to WordPress prevailed.

I think .Blog domain names could prove to be very popular amongst
