Video: Why is .VIP Popular in China?

0

I am the first to admit that I don’t really understand the Chinese domain name market. I understand why certain domain names have significant value, but I have no idea about the underlying factors that are really contributing to the growth in capital that has been pouring into the domain space.

One example of my lack of knowledge relates to .VIP domain names. Believe it or not, there are now nearly half a million registered .VIP domain names, according to nTLDStats.com. Over 83% of those registered domain names are parked. Also interestingly, I believe the 5 registrars with the greatest volume of .VIP domain name registrations are based in China.

I saw a video shared by 101Domain that offers some insight about why .VIP domain names are so popular, and I embedded it below for those who want to learn more about the extension and its popularity amongst buyers in  China. The video features Joe Alagna of 101Domain, Susan Lawrence of Minds + Machines (operator of .VIP), and Simon Cousins of Allegravita, a specialist in the Chinese domain market.

If you have questions about .VIP domain names or the Chinese market, you are welcome to post them in the comment section:

Details About Securing a .Blog Domain Name

KKWT BlogKnock Knock, WHOIS There (KKWT) is the company that will be operating the .Blog domain name extension. KKWT is a sister company of WordPress, the most popular blogging CMS used by millions of websites. For that reason among others, I think .Blog is going to be a highly sought after new gTLD extension, and I believe we will see a greater percentage of developed .Blog domain names than other extensions.

Earlier this morning, Mark Armstrong  published a blog post on WordPress.com announcing the Sunrise period for trademark owners to secure their .Blog domain name. Judging by the number of UDRP and URS filings this year, I think trademark owners should participate in the Sunrise period to protect their brands.

In today’s blog post, KKWT also mentioned two .Blog websites:

co.ltd Domain Sells for $115k

Donuts has privately sold the CO.ltd domain name for $115,000, according to an email I received from Mason Cole. The company that acquired the domain name is Chinese-based Hangzhou e-business Institute.

Just a couple of sales like that and the entire $185,000 application fee for the extension would be paid for in full!

Here’s the information that Mason shared with me this afternoon:

Will .Web Become Best Selling New gTLD Extension?

0

I’ve been reading all about the .Web domain name extension. Andrew, Kevin, Mike, Konstantinos, and Theo have all shared their thoughts about .Web domain names. I also shared some thoughts about .Web domain names. It seems that the majority of people commenting on blogs and forums believe .Web is going to be very popular.

I am curious if you think .Web will ultimately become the best selling new gTLD extension. At the present time, there are more .XYZ domain names than any other new gTLD extension with about 6.4 million registered domain names. The .XYZ registry achieved this number over two years by offering many inexpensive (or free) domain names. Many people seem to think .Web is the best of the new extensions, and I would be interested in knowing if readers believe .Web will surpass other extensions.

In addition to the new extensions that are currently available for sale, other extensions that are coming on the market in the near future could also be competitive. I think .Blog is bound to be successful with the backing of WordPress, and .Shop may also prove to be a big seller.

In the next few years, do you think .Web is going to surpass other new extensions? Vote in the poll below, but more importantly, please share your thoughts about why or why not in the comment section.

I Don’t Get .Web Domain Names

Earlier this morning, Andrew Allemann broke the news that the auction for the .Web new gTLD extension “has concluded with a $135 million price.” I really don’t understand why .Web is so appealing that an entity reportedly paid 9 figures for the rights to operate the extension.

In my opinion, Internet-related terms such as “web” and “world wide web” are less widely used today than years ago. Web seems almost passé , in my opinion, although the longer term “website” is still used by pretty much everyone.

I did a Google Trends search of “web,” and the results seem to corroborate my opinion on this. Aside from a slight increase in the last couple of years, there has been a significant downward slope for “web,” as you can see from this screenshot I took:

data.world Co-Founder Discusses Domain Name & Branding

Matt Laessigdata.world is an Austin based tech startup that aims to be the hub of data sharing and collaboration to solve problems that come with the abundance of data available to scientists, engineers, medical professions, and other data users. You can read more about the company in this Fast Company article.

A week ago, I  wrote about the company’s $14 million round of funding from a large group of venture companies and individual investors.  As far as I know, this is one of the largest funding rounds for a company using a new gTLD domain name.

After learning about the company,  I reached out to data.world COO and Co-Founder Matt Laessig to ask about the company’s  branding and usage of a new domain name extension. With my  my .com-centric background, I had several questions about  choosing a new gTLD extension and using a domain name with a new extension. Matt was kind enough to share details about  how the company decided on data.world, and he discussed other aspects of using a .world domain name.

DomainInvesting.com: Before moving forward with data.world, how much knowledge did you have about the new gTLD domain names?

Matt Laessig: I had some
