Geographic Domain Names

Town of Pohatcong Buys Pohatcong.com

I read an interesting story on LehighValleyLive.com involving a geodomain name, and I want to share it with you. According to the article, the town of Pohatcong, New Jersey (population 3,416 in 2010) purchased the Pohatcong.com for $10,000. The seller was reportedly a member of the town’s police force.

Before buying the .com domain name, the town has been using Pohatcongtwp.org, which is clearly more difficult to remember. Imagine passing town signs on the street and elsewhere and having to recall that domain name. Obviously, the town name .com was a major upgrade for them.

It looks like the town made  a wise move with this acquisition. If you do a Google search for “Pohatcong,” you’ll see that  Pohatcong.com ranks #1 and the town’s domain name currently ranks #2, just below the .com domain name.

The town takes possession of the domain name and website on August 1, and it would be smart for them to use two separate websites on these domain names, eliminating the issue of duplicate content and allowing them to control the top two results. Should they merge the two websites into one, they will most likely lose one of its results spots.

Congratulations to the town on making a good domain name move.

Humorous Reply to a C&D Letter Sent to the Owner of a Geodomain Name

When I was initially looking to acquire a geodomain name, I was assured by a number of people that there would not likely be any issues regarding owning a domain name that comprises the name of a city or town. In the 5+ years of owning at least two geodomain names, this has proven to be true, with nary a complaint received. Unfortunately for one guy, this isn’t the case.

Staci Zaretsky shares an interesting story on the Above the Law legal website concerning the WestOrange.info geodomain name. WestOrange.info is owned by a person named Jake Freivald who had built a “rudimentary” website about the town of West Orange, New Jersey. According to the article, “it doesn’t look like a site that’s sponsored by West Orange in any way, shape, or form — unless the town hired middle schoolers to create its online presence.”

That apparently didn’t stop the town attorney from

Mexico.com Up For Sale

It’s no secret that I believe exact match .com geodomain names can be turned into profitable businesses. I haven’t had much luck doing this, but I believe exceptional geodomain names like Mexico.com or Philadelphia.com have considerable valuable.

According to a press release (posted below this write up) this morning, the Mexico.com domain name is now for sale, and Boston-based Domain Advisors is the broker for this domain name. Mexico.com is currently developed, and Screenshots.com shows several iterations of the website since 2004. I clicked on a number of the links on the home page, and they seem to mostly take visitors to other websites. Google does show that 480 Mexico.com pages are indexed.

Privacy is currently enabled, so I can’t be sure of the current owner.  There appears to be some type of connection between Vegas.com and Mexico.com. In June of 2012, Vegas.com was listed as the Administrative Contact according to DomainTools  (before it went private). In addition, on the “Our History” page on Mexico.com, it says “Mexico.com is operated by VEGAS.com, a customer-friendly, innovative and comprehensive travel company located in Henderson, NV.” It further states that “Mexico.com and VEGAS.com are part of the Greenspun Family of companies. The Greenspun family has supported and helped Vegas grow for more than 60 years, starting with the publication of the oldest family-owned newspaper in Nevada, the Las Vegas Sun.”

In 2004, a UDRP was filed

Boulevards Looking to Sell One Major City.com Domain Name

boulevards-logoI received an email from Frank Aiello of Domain Holdings yesterday, and there were a number of major US city .com domain names listed for sale. Included in the list was Philadelphia.com, Detroit.com, Memphis.com, SaltLakeCity.com, and a few others. I immediately knew these names are owned by Boulevards, and I reached out to Dan Pulcrano, CEO of Boulevards, to inquire further.

Although Dan has several of these domain names listed for sale, he is not looking to sell all of them. Here’s what Dan had to say in an email to me yesterday:

Real Estate Agents Discuss Why They Own RealEstate.com Domain Names

In 2010, I wrote an article asking if real estate agents understand domain names. At that point in time, it had been my experience that many did not realize the value of exact match domain names (EMDs). Since that time, I have closed a number of solid deals on geoRealEstate.com domain names, and have met many real estate agents who value keyword domain names highly.

With this realization that there are many real estate agents who do “get” domain names, I thought it would be interesting to reach out to a number of agents and real estate professionals that own EMDs to get their perspective on these domain name assets.

Here are some of their responses:

Courchevel.com: Award Winning Website on EMD

I wanted to pass along what I think is a very cool website on an exact match geodomain name. When you have a chance, check out  Courchevel.com. The domain name and website are operated by Courchevel Tourisme, and they’ve  been owned by the tourism office for quite some time.

Courchevel is located in the French Alps, and is a fantastic ski resort. The well done website has been nominated for two sets of web development awards: CSSDA and AWWARDS.

Another ski resort company that understands the value of exact match domain names is Vail. They own Vail.com, Breckenridge.com, and BeaverCreek.com, which are the names of ski areas but also the names of the towns in which they are located. Vail also owns Snow.com, and I think they should consider buying Winter.com, which is currently for sale.

This isn’t really a domain name story, but looking at websites like Courchevel.com are inspiring.
