Generic Domain Names

Cover Upgrades to Cover.com

Cover is a free app that tracks insurance rates and allows people to “cover” (aka get coverage for) items like cars, homes, pets, jewelry and electronics after taking a photo of the item using their phone. Cover uses CoverInsurance.com for its website, although the company has also been using UseCover.com to forward to CoverInsurance.com. Smartly, it looks like the company secured the Cover.com domain name.

This morning, I noticed a Whois change on Cover.com. The domain name was previously owned by Digimedia, and it is now privately registered. When I visited Cover.com, it forwarded me to CoverInsurance.com. Because Digimedia doesn’t generally comment about its deals, I am not certain if the insurance app acquired the domain name, and if the company did, I couldn’t speculate about how much the domain name cost with any certainty. I could see this domain name selling for mid six figures though.

Cover was founded in 2014, and it looks like the app is

Two Keyword Brandables Raise Funds

I was catching up on some reading this morning, and I wanted to share two articles about financial startup businesses who have raised significant funding and are using brandable keyword .com domain names.

According to CNBC, a company called Ripple has raised $55 million in funding from several large banks. The company has also been backed by Google Ventures. Crunchbase shows that Ripple is closing in on raising $100 million in total funding.

LadderGolf.com: Great EMD Example

LadderGolf.comOver the Fourth of July weekend, we had a BBQ for a group of friends and their families. We had  a bunch of lawn games set up, including a game of ladder golf. To make a long story short, we bought the ladder golf game from one of the big box stores at the last minute, and the quality sucked.

I enjoy playing ladder golf on the beach, and I thought it would be a good idea to find a good quality ladder golf set for the next time we have people over. I did some searching and ended up seeing who owns LadderGolf.com. As one might expect, LadderGolf.com is a website that sells ladder golf sets as well as spare and replacement parts and pieces.

I love the idea of LadderGolf.com. The exact match domain name is perfect for the product it sells. People who visit LadderGolf.com or see LadderGolf.com know what to expect when they type it in to their browser. It’s

Google’s 20 Most Valuable Keyword Domain Names

I’ve come across Google in many Whois lookups. The company owns quite a few keyword .com domain names that I would love to buy. Some of these domain names were independently acquired by the company at some point, and others were acquired when they acquired various companies that already owned the domain names.

Using DomainIQ.com, I did some research to find the best keyword and/or generic domain names owned by Google. The domain names I listed below are the most valuable domain names without consideration of the company that may be operating on the domain name. For instance, Google owns Blogger.com, and I considered the domain name on its own merits rather than paying attention to the Blogger platform.

In my opinion, here are Google’s 20 most valuable keyword and generic domain names (in alphebetical order):

BikeToursDirect Rebrands as BikeTours.com

BikeToursDirect is a company that represents more than 100 bike tour operators in over 70 countries around the world. The company was established as BikeToursDirect in 2003, and the company recently rebranded to BikeTours.com. When you visit BikeToursDirect.com, you are forwarded to BikeTours.com.

On the homepage, there is an interstitial overlay with a message from the founder stating, “We’ve changed our name and expanded our site to reflect the broad spectrum of tours we now offer across the globe. We want to spread the joy of bike touring — and we hope our new look and content will inspire you to explore the world on two wheels!

There is also a link to a page on the website with more information about the rebranding. Here are some additional details:

Help.com Founder in Inc’s 30 Under 30

The founder of  Help.com  was listed in this year’s Inc. Magazine 30 Under 30  list composed of the “best and brightest young entrepreneurs” under the age of 30. Doug Hanna is a 24 year old who founded Help.com in 2014.

According to the company’s twitter profile, Help.com is “building the next generation of customer service software.” Help.com is an intuitive domain name that is perfect for what the company is offering.

The Help.com domain name is a fantastic url, and it was obviously expensive to acquire. The Inc article touches on the topic of cost, but it doesn’t share much detail about the acquisition price:

“Another knack Hanna evidently has: choosing domain names. Figuring a moniker like Help.com could set his company apart in a competitive space, Hanna tracked down its owner and negotiated a deal. He won’t say how much he paid, but he admits: ‘A lot.'”

The Whois record for Help.com went private in January of 2014, but prior to that, Help.com was owned by CBS Interactive, according to the DomainTools Whois History Tool. The domain name was acquired by CBS as
