RealEstate.com Sold for $8.25 Million?

Robin Wauters at TechCrunch is reporting that RealEstate.com was acquired for $8.25 million. I assume the site, which ranks #3 in Google for the term “real estate,” was included in the deal. In my opinion, this is a hell of a deal for the buyer. I don’t entirely trust the accuracy of Compete, but they peg the traffic at 600k+ visitors a month and growing.

RealEstate.com is the category defining domain name and has a bunch of traffic, and I am surprised it sold for under $10 million. Of course I don’t know any financials behind the company so my opinion is simply based on the domain name and traffic.

Based solely on the merits of the domain name, do you think $8,250,000 is a fair deal for RealEstate.com or do you think it’s worth more or less?

Cheesecake.com Goes on The Market

I received an email from David Clements this weekend announcing that Cheesecake.com is on the market. Clements and a partner launched an e-commerce website over a year ago and has decided to put the business up for sale.

According to Clements, “the site, contacts, photography, logo, etc are included. We use a third-party for the shopping cart and some other functionality so the new owner would need to continue that business relationship or do some coding.” The price for Cheesecake.com is $500,000.

I am a big fan of cheesecake, and I think it’s a great gift. In fact, I sent clients and friends cheesecakes from Junior’s for the holidays a few years ago. Google’s Adwords keyword tool shows an exact match search volume of 0ver 200,000, so there are a lot of people looking to buy cheesecake.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a company like Junior’s or even 1-800-Flowers make a play for this domain name. If you happen to be interested in discussing a sale, be in touch with David. I am sure you could also reach out to Domain Capital for financing options if that’s of interest.

Mike Mann Sells Luxury.CO for $60k

Mike Mann is reporting that his company has sold the domain name Luxury.CO for $60,000. The Whois data has not changed yet, so it’s not known who acquired the domain name or how the domain name will be used. With the end of the summer fast approaching, this will likely be one of the top ten sales of last week.

In May of 2011, Mann’s company sold Business.CO for $80,000. It appears that domain name was purchased as an investment, and it’s currently for sale again for $200,000  via GoDaddy.

Mann was an early investor in .CO domain names, and his company still owns a portfolio of keyword domain names. The list of names for sale is available on AUX.com.

 

Report: Jig.com Domain Name Cost $85k

I think Merlin Kauffman is one of the most likeable guys in the domain industry. He attends just about all of the tradeshows and events, and I don’t recall ever seeing him without a big grin on his face. Merlin is a young guy, and his company has amassed a portfolio of great generic domain names.

This morning, I read an article on TechCrunch about a startup called Jig, which operates on Jig.com. The startup, was founded by Joshua Schacter, who also founded Delicious. It was incubated in Schacter’s Tasty Labs, which received a  reported $3 million in funding in November of 2010.

In doing some research, it appears that Merlin Kauffman’s company, True Magic, LLC, owned Jig.com as late as April of 2011. In May, the domain name was acquired by Tasty Labs, although the sale does not seem to have been publicly reported at the time.

In addition to the TechCrunch article, noted venture capitalist Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures, one of the companies that funded Tasty Labs, wrote an article on his blog about Jig.com to help introduce the startup. In the comment section, someone asked what the price of the domain name was, and Schacter replied “$85k.”

I reached out to Merlin for a comment and will post it when I hear back. He travels extensively and I am away in California right now, so it might not get updated very quickly (same as comment approval).

Sedo Offers White Paper to Help Domain Owners Sell More Effectively

As you can see week in and week out, domain owners sell a lot of domain name inventory in Sedo. While their brokers generally handle the highest value sales (some of which aren’t ever reported), the vast majority of sales seem to take place on the platform, either with buy it now pricing or via negotiations.

Sedo has posted a white paper online with advice for domain owners on how they can more effectively sell their domain names. Whether you are posting your names for sale on Sedo or another aftermarket platform, its a worthwhile read.

You can download the white paper for free on Sedo’s website, and you don’t have to have an account to get it. Check it out and perhaps you’ll learn a thing or two to help sell your names.
