I was looking through the NameJet list of “Most Active Pending Delete Backorders” that was emailed to me a few moments ago. One domain name stood out to me among the rest, but not for domain investment purposes. Coming up for auction in less than three days is CambridgeAnalytica.org.
The CambridgeAnalytica.org domain name is in pending delete status right now, meaning drop catching services like NameJet, SnapNames, DropCatch.com, and others will compete to catch this domain name as soon as it becomes available. The venue that catches this domain name will then auction it off to the highest bidder.
CambridgeAnalytica.org had been owned by Cambridge Analytica. According to a Wikipedia entry about this entity, “Cambridge Analytica Ltd was a British political consulting firm that combined misappropriation of digital assets, data mining, data brokerage and data analysis with strategic communication during the electoral processes.” It is associated with one of the biggest scandals faced by Facebook, with reverberations felt to this day. A CrunchBase listing for the company shows that CambridgeAnalytica.org was its primary domain name.
It’s anybody’s guess what CambridgeAnalytica.org will sell for in auction, but it is a chance for someone to own a piece of Internet history.
The domain name was caught by DropCatch.com and is in auction:
