Managing Sale Listings Post-Inquiry

I assume that most people with domain name portfolios have sale listings at marketplaces like Sedo, Aftermarket.com, and Afternic. If you’re like me, you list some domain names for sale at BIN prices and others are of the make offer variety. On occasion, I will update the prices as the market dictates, although I often “set it and forget it” in the words of infomercial star Ron Popeil.

Oftentimes, inquiries for my domain names either come from the domain name’s landing page or as a result of my emailing potential buyers. Because of this, many prospects don’t see what price a domain name is listed for on a marketplace, so there could be a price difference – sometimes more or sometimes less depending on market and business conditions.

When this happens, a prospect could

Bloomberg Video: “How Much Would You Pay for the Sandwich.com URL?”

Sedo and Yahoo received a ton of coverage for their auction of some of Yahoo’s domain names, and I thought you might like to see this video that was shown on Bloomberg TV. The commentators discuss the auction and primarily focus on the sale of Sandwich.com.

The auction began on November 14 and it concludes on Thursday, November 21. There are just over 500 domain names included in the auction. AV.com currently has the highest bid of $125,000. Sandwich.com has a high bid of $10,000, although the reserve price range is between $50,000 – $99,999.

You can bid or follow along with the auction here.

Sedo and Donuts Announce Partnership

Sedo  just announced a new partnership with Donuts, and the company was selected to help Donuts sell some of its premium new gTLD domain names. This is positive news for the company considering the number of new gTLD registries Donuts will likely operate.

According to this morning’s news release, “Sedo will manage contention resolution for competing trademarked domains, and will also assist in auctioning premium names that will be reserved from general registration.” The sunrise auctions are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2014. Sedo has also been tapped to manage auctions for some of the “premium” domains that Donuts reserved from general registration.

This good news comes on the heels of some bad news earlier this week regarding Sedo’s partnership with GoDaddy, which will end on March 31, 2014.

Yahoo to Auction Portfolio of Domain Names via Sedo

According to a press release from Sedo, “more than 100 premium domain names from Yahoo portfolio to be auctioned.” The Yahoo domain name auction will take place on Sedo’s platform from November 14 – 21, 2013. Some of the high value domain names include AV.com, Sandwich.com, Sled.com, Jockeys.com, and Crackers.com.

It’s not every day that a publicly traded Internet company decides to publicly sell some of its valuable domain name assets at auction. I think this domain auction could produce some solid results considering the inventory, especially given the provenance and history of the assets. For instance, AV likely stood for Alta Vista, which Yahoo acquired in 2003 and shut down this past July. In my opinion, reserve prices are on the high side, but what doesn’t sell now opens the door for future discussions.

Some of these domain names forward to pages within Yahoo’s network and others are parked at Sedo with a purchase link at the top of the landing page. At the time of this post, only 29 domain names are listed for sale in the auction, but Sedo announced that there are more than 100 domain names included in the auction. You can view

How To Sell a Domain Name

I am often asked “how do you sell a domain name?” or “can you sell my domain name?” and I want to share some advice on how to sell a domain name. If you own a domain name or a portfolio of domain names and you would like to sell them, there are several ways to sell a domain name. Of course, this list doesn’t include selling a domain name when someone inquires about buying a domain name because all that is required of that is a negotiation.

Listed below are 5 ways to sell a domain name and some advice about each method. I personally recommend using an escrow service (Escrow.com for example) when selling a domain name, even if a domain broker is involved.

Sedo Lowers Revenue Forecast

On October 23, 2013, Sedo issued a financial news release with information about the first nine months of the year and its forecast for the remainder of the year. The full release can be found and read on the DGAP website.

Posted below are three pieces of information disseminated in the news release that domain investors may wish to note. I recommend checking out the full release for all of the details since it’s more beneficial to read the entire update rather than just the three snippets I’ve called out below.
