New York City Heralds Approval of .NYC gTLD in Press Release

11

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker  Christine Quinn (who is running for Mayor) issued a press release today heralding the approval of the .NYC gTLD, which had received support from the City. I don’t know how much NYC will help promote .NYC, but it’s clear from the press release, the plan is to target local businesses.

Having our own unique, top-level domain – .nyc – puts New York City at the forefront of the digital landscape and creates new opportunities for our small businesses,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “They’ll now be able to identify themselves as connected to New York City, one of the world’s strongest and most prestigious brands.”

Registering .NYC domain names won’t be available to everyone. In fact,

This Week’s News Round Up

There was quite a bit of news that happened this week that will have an impact on domain investors in one way or another. I didn’t get a chance to write about much of it due to spending a few days in Boston with some guests, so I wanted to give a bit of a summary with links to their sources.

This isn’t going to become a regular feature of my blog, but I want to make sure you’ve seen the news. If I missed something important, please share it with me in the comment section.

Domain Search Tool Helps gTLD Applicants

I’ve written about how the Domain Search Tool  helps me find potential buyers for my domain names by showing me lists of registered domain names that have a specific keyword string in them. I think gTLD registrants can use the tool to help project sales figures and potentially use it for outbound sales.

I can assume that gTLD registries will want to target domain name / website owners who use the gTLD keyword at the end of their domain name. For instance, the .Inc registry will probably want to convince WidgetsInc.com and similar domain name owners to trade “up” to Widgets.Inc. The name is shorter, and it may be easier to remember. The DST can help search for domain names that

.Host Pre-Registrations at HostingCon

Radix Registry will be the operator of the .Host domain registry, as it is one of the uncontested strings for which the company applied. Smartly, the company just announced that it will be accepting pre-registrations for .Host domain names at HostingCon, which is being held in Austin, Texas right now. There are three applicants for a competing .Hosting gTLD.

HostingCon is reportedly the web hosting industry’s largest tradeshow, and there are close to 2,000 attendees at the annual conference. Radix has a booth on the tradeshow floor, and the company will begin to accept non-binding pre-registrations for .Host domain names today.  Pre registrations are available for HostingCon attendees as well as people who aren’t at the conference, and they can be made at  DotHostRegistry.com.

There are several reasons why I think offering pre-registrations are smart:

Uniregistry is Hiring

Uniregistry LogoFrank Schilling is a big proponent of gTLD domain names, and he has invested millions of dollars into his company,  Uniregistry. Not only is Uniregistry physically expanding in Grand Cayman, but the company is also hiring. According to a promoted article on CircleID, Uniregistry is looking to hire a number of employees in different areas of expertise.

Whether you are a developer, engineer, or are in the field of marketing, there may be a job opening that suits your skill set. According to the article, Uniregistry is looking to hire Software Developers, Systems Specialist, Front-end Developers, and Marketing People. The one caveat to this is that employees must be based in Grand Cayman, so you should expect to move to the Caribbean if you are going to be hired.

If I was new to this business, wasn’t married with a child, and/or I was looking to work for someone else in the domain space and had a matching skill set, I would probably consider learning more about the job openings at Uniregistry. We are in a time of massive change to the Internet, and I think Uniregistry is going to be one of the companies at the forefront of these changes. Frank is clearly one of the smartest guys operating in the business, and it would be very cool to be involved with gTLDs from nearly the beginning.

I have no idea when gTLDs will be adopted by consumers or if gTLD domain names will make good investments, but I think we are in a unique period of time right now. Working for a cutting edge company, located in paradise, at this time, seems like something that is going to be a cool experience no matter what happens with these new extensions.

If you are looking to do something cool, take a look at some of the opportunities Uniregistry is currently offering.

Name.com Educating Clients About New TLDs

Name.com LogoI strongly believe that the more that domain registrars publicize and promote new gTLD domain names, the greater the likelihood these TLDs will gain traction with consumers and be in demand. I’ve mentioned how eNom is promoting gTLDs, and I wanted to share the interesting way Name.com is also promoting them.

When you visit Name.com under Products, there is a section called “New TLD Watcher.” This section is devoted to gTLD domain names, which Name.com is calling “nTLDs.” I think that variant is interesting in and of itself because of the confusion factor, but the real area of interest for observers is the amount of information the company provides about these TLDs, including a fairly comprehensive but understandable FAQ page.

Name.com takes things a step further than many other registrars at this point, and the domain registrar has created
