Strong Registration Numbers Does Not Equal Strong Aftermarket

Over the weekend, I wrote about the number of registered .Dev domain names surpassing the 100,000 mark. I think the initial registration numbers are quite strong for this new gTLD extension. Maybe it’s because I am not in the development space, but I never would have guessed there would be any significant demand for .Dev domain names, and it looks like I would have been wrong.

.Dev Passes 100,000 Registrations

According to nTLDStats.com, it looks like there are now more than 100,000 .Dev domain names registered. I can see more than 102,000 .Dev domain names in the zone file, and the number continues to grow.

The .Dev domain name extension is managed by Google, and .Dev domain names became available to register via the early access program on February 19. Since general availability phase began on February 28, the number of registrations has grown strongly. From what I can tell, it looks like there were about 5,000 domain names registered via the EAP, and in the last week and a half, over 95,000 domain names have been registered.

Apple Registers Hello.Apple Domain Name

Apple is the operator of the .Apple new gTLD extension. I noticed an interesting domain name registration earlier this morning, courtesy of my DomainTools registrant monitor tool: Apple registered Hello.Apple. This might not seem like big news, but I think it is notable considering nTLDStats.com reports there are only 5 .Apple domain names currently registered.

I was browsing the New York Post on my iPhone this morning when a GoDaddy banner advertisement caught my attention. The banner was highlighting three new gTLD domain names: You.Training, You.Fitness, and You.Coach:
