7 Figure Denver.com Purchase: “It’s Paid Off”

Deborah Kearns of RIS Media published an article about Peter Niederman and his Kentwood Real Estate brokerage. As you may recall, Kentwood Real Estate acquired Denver.com in 2012 for an undisclosed seven figure purchase price. The domain name was sold by Boulevards, a company that owns many large city .com domain names.

Judging by Peter’s comments in the RIS Media article, it seems that things are going well for Kentwood and Denver.com. In the article, Peter recalled that some people thought he was “crazy” for spending seven figures on the domain name, but the purchase has “paid off” for him and his company.

I reached out to Peter to ask about the article, and he let me know

My New Hampshire Vacation Domain Names

I was born and raised in New Hampshire, and I currently live in just outside of Boston, which is about an hour from New Hampshire. I learned how to ski in New Hampshire (Loon and Waterville Valley), spent time in the lakes region, and enjoyed being raised in NH (for the most part).

Over the last year or so, I bought a handful of New Hampshire vacation area domain names:

  • LakeWinnipesaukee.com – Private acquisition
  • Sunapee.com – Auction at NameJet
  • SquamLake.com – Auction at NameJet
  • NHMountains.com – Hand registered at Uniregistry

I also own quite a few real estate domain names such as WhiteMountainsRealEstate.com, JaffreyRealEstate.com, BowRealEstate.com, LakeWinnisquamRealEstate.com, and a few others.

Lake Winnipesaukee is

Josh Metnick: How Should Illinois.com Be Used?

Josh Metnick is an Internet entrepreneur who sold Chicago.com to the Chicago Sun-Times for an undisclosed figure. Yesterday, Josh posted a tweet with a link to a Quora page he created soliciting opinions on what to put on Illinois.com, a domain name his company owns.

At the moment, Illinois.com hosts a simple landing page announcing that “Something incredible is coming soon,” although it seems like what is coming has yet to be determined.

I think the three primary uses that make the most sense would be for

UDRP Filed on NorthernIreland.com

A UDRP has been filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization for the descriptive geographic NorthernIreland.com domain name. According to the WIPO website, the UDRP Complainant is Invest Northern Ireland / Northern Ireland Tourist Board. It appears that this organization uses the longer  DiscoverNorthernIreland.com domain name for its website, which probably explains why it wants NorthernIreland.com.

If you visit the NorthernIreland.com domain name, you can see that it is owned by Mike Mann’s company, and it is listed for sale on DomainMarket.com for $600,000. It appears that this domain name has been owned by Mann-affiliated companies for many years.

John Oliver Discusses .NYC Domain Names (Slightly NSFW)

.NYC domain names were front and center in this clip from HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. More specifically, Oliver discussed .NYC domain name registrations related to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Some of these domain names were vulgar and likely defensively registered on behalf of the former Mayor (I would assume without his knowledge).

Andrew Allemann reported on these domain name registrations a week ago. Some of the Mike Bloomberg domain names he discussed include gems like BloombergBlows.NYC, MikeIsTooShort.NYC, MikeBloombergisaDweeb.NYC, MikeBloombergBlows.NYC, and FuckBloomberg.NYC.

There has been quite a bit of press about .NYC domain names lately, and Neustar must be loving it. The Wall Street Journal published an article last week, and other local newspapers have published articles as well. You can’t buy this type of publicity, and it’s probably helping to contribute to the growth of the extension.

Enjoy the video embedded below, although it might be a bit unsafe for work due to some of the language:

.NYC Registrations Passes .London

Because of my personal connection with New York City and the domain space, I have been paying closer attention to the .NYC domain name extension than other new gTLD extensions. I have been following along with .NYC since prior to the application process. According to today’s update at NTLDStats.com, it looks like there are now more .NYC domain names than .London domain names. As of this morning, there are 48,671 .NYC domain names, and there are 48,479 .London domain names.

.London had about a one month head start to sell its domain names to the general public. .NYC went on sale to the general public on October 8, 2014 and .London went on sale to the general public on September 9, 2014. Both TLDs have strong local support. Two weeks ago, the .NYC team at Neustar along with representatives from the Office of the Mayor of New York City  rang the opening bell at the NYSE  to celebrate the launch of .NYC domain names.

The populations of London and New York City seem to be
