Generic Domain Names

Richard Swerdlow Featured in Miami Herald

If you live in the Miami area, you might have seen an article in today’s Miami Herald discussing the successes of Internet entrepreneur, Richard Swerdlow. As you may know, Swerdlow is the founder and CEO of the company that owns and operates real estate websites on valuable keyword domain names, including Condos.com, Houses.com, Property.com, Properties.com and Location.com.

The article discusses how Swerdlow got involved in real estate and ultimately how his company has grown and thrived during the last few years. You should  certainly read the entire article when you have a chance, but here are a few excerpts from the article I found particularly interesting:

Houses.com Announces Joint Venture

Houses.comIf you are a domain investor and you have ever had the opportunity to exchange emails with Richard Swerdlow, you’ve probably been impressed with the company logos in the footer of his email: Condo.com, Houses.com, Property.com, and Location.com. With the exception of Location.com, which is under development, the other three exact match domain names are fully operating businesses.

I read some news about Houses.com that was reported yesterday, and I want to share it with you. In light of the recent Apartments.com deal and Auction.com deal, it seems that there is quite a bit of money flowing in the real estate space, especially for these exact match keyword .com domain names with successful businesses.

In a press release yesterday, Houses.com announced a joint venture with Bayview Asset Management, LLC, a huge real estate investment and mortgage firm based in Florida. According to the press release, “the transaction provides Houses.com capital and resources to elevate its brand, add product features, and scale consumer traffic and revenues.” Terms of the deal were not shared in the news release.

It would be very cool to see another great exact match domain name like this become a well known brand in this space. According to Swerdlow, that is the plan for Houses.com. “We are dedicated to becoming the definitive marketplace for single-family houses and a leading consumer brand in the massive, growing online real estate market,” he said.

28 Business Owners Discuss Their Exact Match Domain Names

I want to share an article that I believe will interest you. Edwin Hayward of Webmastering.co.uk published an article that shares comments from 28 business owners who operate on exact match domain names (EMDs). The compilation of comments comes from a variety of sources, and the focus is on what the domain name means to the company.

Aside from the fact that it’s interesting to read about businesses that successfully use EMDs, I also think a resource like this can be beneficial to you. When you’re negotiating the sale of an exact match domain name and need to emphasize the value of the domain name, you can point your buyer to Edwin’s article. Alternatively, you can also pick and choose specific quotes from that article to share with the prospective buyer.

I have found that some companies and people are reluctant to

Vine.com Rebrands as VineMarket.com

VineMarket.comI was checking out Vine.com, a website owned by Quidsi (which is owned by Amazon), and I noticed that the company appears to have been rebranded very recently. Instead of the Vine.com logo, the new logo is for VineMarket.com. On the website’s  about us page  and footer, the company now refers to itself as VineMarket.com instead of Vine.com. The website still resolves to Vine.com, and VineMarket.com forwards to Vine.com. Vine.com was launched in 2012.

I did some searching to see when this rebranding may have occurred, and here is what I found:

  • According to the Archive.org entry on March 6, 2014, the footer on the Vine.com website stated, “Vine.com is operated by Quidsi Solutions LLC.
  • According to the Archive.org entry on March 7, 2014, the footer on the Vine.com website stated, “VineMarket.com is operated by Quidsi Solutions LLC.
  • According to DomainTools, on December 24, 2013, the domain name was registered publicly at Enom.
  • According to DomainTools, on December 26, 2013, the domain name went private, and it appears to have transferred to GoDaddy. The domain name is still registered under privacy.

Interestingly, the VineMarket.com domain name is

Exact Match .com Domain Names Making News

During the last couple of weeks, there have been news reported about several exact match .com domain names and the companies that operate them. While news about these individual companies might not directly produce residual value for our domain names, I think reports about these businesses with exact match .com domain names is good for the domain name resale market.

Here are four news stories from the last couple of weeks I have been tracking pertaining to exact match .com domain names. Keep in mind that some of these news reports are related to the companies who use EMDs and is not simply “domain name news.” You should also keep in mind that I am biased because my portfolio is almost exclusively made up of EMDs, and my developed brands are built on EMDs.

I am sure I missed additional articles, and if so, I invite you to share them with all of us.

Oakland Athletics Migrate to Athletics.com

The Oakland Athletics baseball team announced that it will begin using the Athletics.com domain name for its website. The baseball franchise, or quite possibly Major League Baseball, purchased the Athletics.com domain name back in May of 2012, in a deal that had been reported in initially by Jamie Zoch of DotWeekly and written about further in Domain Name Wire. The purchase price of Athletics.com was not revealed.

The decision to rebrand the website from OaklandAthletics.com to Athletics.com was made to keep all of the team’s branding and social media the same. Here’s how the team announced the news today:

“In an effort to ease fan access to the official club website and, in turn, conform with most other Major League clubs’ sites, the A’s have announced “athletics.com” as their new brand domain.

The switch, from the original “oaklandathletics.com,” is effective immediately, and it “will make accessing the Athletics much easier and faster for fans,” the team said in a statement.

Moreover, the name matches that of the A’s official social media accounts, including @Athletics on Twitter.”

In 2009, just about 73% of MLB teams owned the matching team name .com domain name. Since that time, a number of teams / MLB were able to buy their .com domain name, including Athletics.com, Angels.com, Rockies.com, and Cardinals.com.  It appears that there are only a handful of teams remaining that do not own the exact match .com for their franchise website. Those team name .com domain names include: Rangers.com, Rays.com, Twins.com, and Giants.com.

Kudos to the Athletics and Major League Baseball for buying and using Athletics.com.
