Generic Domain Names

Otis: Fix Your Forwards!

According to its Wikipedia page, “Otis Elevator Company is the world’s largest manufacturer of vertical transportation systems today, principally focusing on elevators and escalators.” The next time you’re on an elevator, have a look on the metal frame on the ground as you walk in or on the keypad, and chances are good it will read “Otis.”

At some point in time, Otis Elevator made some very good domain acquisitions. Some quick DomainTools research shows me that the company owns three exceptional descriptive domain names for their product lines: Elevator.com, Lift.com, and Escalator.com. Historical Whois records show that these domain names have been owned for quite some time, and Otis is possibly the original registrant for all of them.

Not surprisingly,

Demand Media Launches Stronger.com

Stronger.com LogoAccording to a post this week on the Demand Media blog, the company just launched a new website called Stronger, which can be found on Stronger.com. The website is “a subscription-based online fitness and nutrition program – that builds on LIVESTRONG.COM’s continued success.”

Off the bat, I found it very interesting that Demand Media chose to make the url part of the Livestrong.com website. When you visit Stronger.com, you are instantly taken to  Livestrong.com/Stronger/ instead of a standalone website. The company could have gotten away with branding the new website without the matching domain name, but clearly they were smart enough to get the domain name first since they know many people will automatically type it into their browser.

I did a bit of research to learn more about the domain name, and I did

Bouquet.com: Bought at TRAFFIC, Website Already Live

Bouquet.comI’ve heard stories about domain auctions taking quite a bit of time to close post-auction. This is not one of those stories. In fact, the sale of  Bouquet.com is quite the opposite of those, and there is a great auction story to go along with it.

In my opinion, Bouquet.com was the best domain name listed for sale at the TRAFFIC Las Vegas auction. The domain name had a high bid of $27,500, and didn’t hit the reserve price. Post-auction, however, the high bidder agreed to pay the $30,000 reserve price, and the domain name was sold.

Bill McClure of Coffee.org was the winning bidder, and he gave me a play-by-play of the auction and how he became the new owner of the domain name:

Airline.com Preparing to Launch

Airline.com LogoAirline.com is a great industry defining domain name, and the website is expected to launch within the next couple of weeks. I reached out to the owner of the domain name and Airline.com management, and I have been given some information about the acquisition and development of the website.

The owner of the domain name is a company called Intercontinental Domain, Inc. Although the company signed a NDA when it was acquired, I have learned that it had a “mid 6 figure price,” and it was acquired in a private sale from a company called Airline Information Research, Inc. in January of 2012.

The website on Airline.com is being developed by a UK-based company called Okenyon Webs. The goal of the website is to become the

Exact Match Domain Success Story

It’s no secret that I like exact match keyword domain names (EMD). When shopping for something where I don’t have a particular brand in mind, I will frequently visit the .com EMD to see who owns it and if I might be able to purchase something there. I also use it as an acquisition opportunity in case it’s available for a good price.

I want to share a EMD success story with you.

I was in New Orleans with some friends this past weekend. We decided we would rent a balcony on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, and I did some research to find a place to rent. I opted not to use Google and found two sites using direct navigation: BourbonStreetBalcony.com and BourbonBalcony.com. As luck would have it, both domain names have websites advertising balconies, and we used one of them for the rental.

In my opinion, it’s a great idea for a company to use an exact match keyword domain name to advertise a product or service. It’s even more beneficial when there isn’t a well known brand in that space because Google tends to rank well known brands better even for unbranded keyword searches. Without a major brand, EMDs tend to rank higher from what I’ve noticed. For instance, BourbonStreetBalcony.com ranks #1 in Google for the search.

If it wasn’t for the EMD, I probably wouldn’t have known about this balcony, especially because a friend had found another balcony through a concierge referral.

Most people don’t search like I did, but direct navigation traffic continues to produce qualified leads, and if the owner of the domain name I found tracks his referrals, he’ll notice that this converted lead was organic and not from a search engine.

LonghornMounts.com: Great Domain Development Story

I wanted to share a brief story about a great (small) business that was developed by a domain investor on an exact match domain name. My hope is that it will inspire you in the event you are looking to build a small business on one of your exact match domain names.

Terrell and Penny Miller are owners of Rancho Media, a small domain and development company specializing in the agriculture industry. In addition to their day jobs, they own and operate Cattlesoft,  developing cattle software and operating several e-commerce stores serving the livestock industry. They work from their Texas ranch where they also raise Texas Longhorn steers.

In the past when their  cattle died, they had them mounted by a local taxidermist. After hanging their second head on the wall, Penny joked to Terrell that his head would be the third if he tried to hang any more! As a result of this ultimatum, Terrell decided he would  figure out how to sell them.

Terrell hand registered LonghornMounts.com  for a few dollars with the help of a Go Daddy coupon. He and Penny quickly built a website, and in a short period of time, the website was ranking #1 for “longhorn mounts” and receiving around 300 visitors per month. The company has already successfully sold mounts, and with prices starting at a few thousand dollars, it’s clearly a winning business.

One thing I’ve stressed about  development  is something that Terrell and Penny believe in as well. When you take on a development project, it should be related to a topic of personal interest to you. If you are knowledgable and passionate about a topic, it will help you build a website and hopefully a business. Owning the exact match domain name helped Terrell and Penny rank in Google pretty quickly, and their offering has helped them sustain its ranking.

I’ve met Terrell and Penny at a couple of domain conferences, and it’s great to hear success stories from people like them.
