WaPo: Porn․ai, Deepfake․com and Deepfakes․com Sold for ~$550k

On Sunday, the Washington Post published an article about how the adult entertainment business is being transformed by artificial intelligence. Notably, the article mentioned three domain names that were acquired by a company operating in the business for approximately $550,000:

“Then the tides of fate turned again for Jones. His love for technology and shows like “Star Trek” made him an early believer in the power of artificial intelligence to change the world for good. Watching the public react to the releases of OpenAI’s conversational bot, ChatGPT, and image engine, DALL-E, in recent years, Jones felt an excitement he hadn’t known since getting his first computer as a teen, he said.

He called up his old business partner, and the two immediately spent about $550,000 securing the web domains for porn dot ai, deepfake dot com and deepfakes dot com, Jones said. “Lightspeed” was back.”

Because of Whois privacy, it’s difficult to tell if these domain names were owned by the same entity before being sold. Based on a look at nameserver records, they don’t appear to have used the same nameservers.

Two of these domain names have prior sales records archived in NameBio. Porn.ai previously sold for $7,250 back in 2018 and Deepfakes.com sold for $5,000, also in 2018.

Because the individual sale prices weren’t shared in the article, these sales won’t be indexed in NameBio or DNJournal.

Thanks to Alan for sharing this with me and to Alex for posting about it.

  1. Yes, apparently Gen Z guys are really wooing and treating AI GFs? LOL
I could create and launch one of these chatbot girlfriends and prob make some decent coin, but I don’t want to break any hearts or take away monies better spent on things like books, tech equipment, and er, uh, on real girlfriends (the human kind)

And this AI GF thing is just nascent.

    Wait until the technology advances….yikes
