If you follow the trading card market, I am sure you’re aware that it has been on fire lately. In fact, the New York Times published an article about the state of the market last month, covering what has fueled its recent growth. Trading cards as a business covers sports cards to Pokemon cards and everything in between.
The top descriptive domain name for the trading card market is TradingCards.com. That domain name had been listed for sale on Afternic for $2.5 million. I learned the domain name sold last week for close to its BIN price, trading for $2 million. A representative from Afternic told me the buyer found the Afternic-listed domain name via GoDaddy search.
I’ve known the seller of TradingCards.com for many years, and I am keeping his identity private at his request. He has been involved in the domain name space as well as the trading card business for many years. TradingCards.com sold strictly as a domain name.
The Whois record for TradingCards.com is private, so the buyer is unknown at this time. The domain name currently resolves to a minimal GoDaddy Airo landing page.
Once DNJournal and NameBio record this $2 million domain name sale, it will rank in the top 5 publicly reported sales of the year. It is also one of the largest two word .com domain name sales of all time, per the NameBio list of the top 100 publicly reported domain name sales of all time.
