Namecheap Prioritizing Sedo Listings Over Afternic

Michael Sumner from NameBio mentioned an unexpected uptick in sales closed via Sedo over the past couple of weeks, and he asked about whether a major registrar began prioritizing Sedo listings:

In response to the question, Namecheap CEO Richard Kirkendall confirmed that happened. Namecheap is now prioritizing Sedo listings when a domain name is listed on Sedo and Afternic:

One thing I am curious about is how that would work when prices are different on the different platforms. For instance, if I have a domain name listed for sale on Sedo for $1,500 and Afternic for $1,000, would Namecheap show the more expensive Sedo listing rather than the Afternic listing?

I don’t update my Sedo pricing as often as I update my Afternic listings, so that is something I will probably do in the short term. My updated pricing may change based on the prioritization with pricing considerations.

  1. Kirkendall may be the best thing Sedo has going for it at the moment, as they’ve decided they cannot or will not implement their own technology to leverage inventory across their own enterprise.
For example, Dhaba․net doesn’t show up in the United reg path, despite using Sedo landers.

  2. I would like to like Sedo again. I really wish they would build some better tech. They’re so far behind, I am surprised they haven’t been bought out or even went under. It’s like they’re not even trying. I think they focus on big brokered deals and said whatever to the rest.
