Grok Knows .com

Grok is a generative AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company, xAI. Grok has been promoted within the X / Twitter ecosystem, and X users who subscribe to X Premium are able to access Grok.

Over the weekend, domain investor and developer Peter Askew shared Grok’s response to a query about selecting a domain name for development. Peter asked Grok to choose between Onions.com and Onions.net. Peter shared this with Grok’s response:

As you can see, Grok chose Onions.com, which I think the vast majority of people would also choose given these two options without considering the acquisition cost or value of either.

In its response, Grok cited the fact that “it is more intuitive and easier to remember, as ‘.com’ is the most common and recognizable top-level domain for commercial websites.” I would have to agree with Grok on this one.

  1. As the saying goes – quite a “softball” question.
    How about this one:

My company name is Onions Capital.
Which is a better domain to choose:
    OnionsCapital.com
    orOnions.com

  2. The prompt is rudimentary and should go deeper. Based on the question it seems that some discussion took place prior to the last question which would have given Grok a basis for the response. Information like: purpose/use of the domain, anticipated cost of acquisition (for each), circumstances surrounding the acquisition, facts regarding the purchaser, budgetary considerations and more. Naturally, I assume you all know this… .
