.com Dominates YC Top Companies by Revenue

Y Combinator, one of the top startup incubators, published a list of its top 50 companies by revenue. The list includes some well-known brands like AirBnB, Reddit, Stripe, Instacart, and quite a few others that are widely known.  The first thing I did when I looked at the list of companies is observe the domain names they use.

47 of the 50 top revenue generating companies use .com domain names. There are only three companies on the list that don’t use .com for their website – OpenSea (OpenSea.io), Groww (Groww.in), and Momentus (Momentus.Space). Of these three companies, one – OpenSea – owns its brand match .com domain name. In 2021, James Iles wrote about OpenSea’s acquisition of OpenSea.com.

My favorite domain names, of course, are the brand matching banger domain names. These are the kinds of domain names that could be used by any company for anything. The top names, in my opinion and in alphabetical order, are:

  • Convoy.com
  • Gusto.com
  • Podium.com
  • Scale.com
  • Stripe.com
  • Wave.com
  • Whatnot.com

  1. It’s evident that even startups prefer .com domains once they achieve a level of establishment and success. In contrast to the current trends of extensions like .io, .ia, and .tech, the popularity of .com remains unrivaled. It is undeniably the king of domains and is likely to maintain its dominance for many years to come.
