Good Direct Marketing Email from Network Solutions as Part of DDN

7

As I quickly scanned my email, I saw something from Network Solutions that caught my eye. The subject was “HORSESTABLE.ORG is Available – Register it Now!” Since I own HorseStable.com (I sold HorseSupply.com earlier this year), I thought it would be smart to register the .org, to give a potential buyer some added value.

Since I don’t generally register domain names at NetSol, I emailed my Godaddy representative and asked him to buy this domain name on my behalf. He replied that the domain name has been registered for a while to Protopixel Pty Ltd, one of Dark Blue Sea’s entities.

I looked back at the email I received and I noticed that it was imploring me to buy this premium domain name in the aftermarket, which I believe is part of the Domain Distribution Network. I’ve seen plenty of upsell efforts at registrars like Godaddy working with the DDN, but this is the first time I was emailed directly instead of a point of sale attempt.

Although I felt the subject was a bit misleading with them suggesting I “register” it now, it’s still a smart direct marketing tactic. Had I been an end user client (most of their clients are), I may have opted to buy it.

This is a great example of a well-targeted direct marketing effort.

Hump Day Light Humor

2

When I was in graduate school earning a degree in Direct Marketing, my thought about an ideal first job was to work for Lester Wunderman, the person considered the father of direct marketing (he didn’t go by “Direct Marketing King” although he could have). As it worked out, when I graduated in 2004, I was hired as a Project Manager (and then later promoted to New Business Associate) at Wunderman, the company founded by Lester Wunderman and a part of Y&R Brands.

I was going through some old emails yesterday and I found the email I sent to colleagues announcing that I was leaving the company to start a new position at AIG. I thought I would share it here because I think it’s somewhat humorous.

Hi Everyone,

As many of you know, today is my last day at Wunderman.   My life-long dream of becoming a professional basketball player has finally come true.   After years of practice, I have officially been signed by the New York Knickerbockers of the MBA – not the National Basketball Association, but the MBA – (Midget Basketball Association).   For those of you who are unaware, we play Tuesdays and Thursdays at Madison Square – the Park, not the Garden.   I know that the life of a professional athlete is one filled with money, alcohol and groupies, but I certainly will not forget all of you.

All kidding aside, I wanted to take a moment to tell you all how much I have enjoyed working with you.   I have learned so much from all of you, and am lucky to have had the opportunity to work with you….

Working at Wunderman was a great experience for me, and it allowed me to work on the agency side of the advertising business, which was helpful in my next job. Some days I actually miss working for a fun company like Wunderman, but the advantages of self-employment certainly are great!

DomainMarketplace.com Launched by Internet REIT

I haven’t heard anything from or about Internet REIT in a while, but I received an email this afternoon from Lisa Box who is Vice President of Sales for iREIT. Lisa wrote to let me know about the launch of DomainMarketplace.com, a website that has iREIT-owned domain names for sale:

I hope this email finds you well.   I wanted to let you know we have recently launched www.domainmarketplace.com! Here you can search the iREIT inventory and buy directly from the site.   We are still testing…”

If you don’t know about Internet REIT, you can learn more about the company on its LinkedIn page. They received funding from Maveron, were a big buyer of domain names a couple of years ago (I see several names I previously owned in this new website), ran into trademark issues, and their domain names receive millions of visitors each month.

DomainMarketplace.com has domain names priced from as low as the $50 range all the way up to 7 figures for OfficeSupply.com and Netster.com. It looks like they would also consider offers on their domain names as well.

Buying Names for $xx-xxx and Selling for $x,xxx Thanks to FreshDrop

I’ve recently started using FreshDrop.net every day because of the valuable information it provides. I primarily use it to scan expired/expiring domain names that will be coming up for sale on Snapnames and NameJet (requires premium account), and I’ve done very well on domain names I found using FreshDrop that have been flipped or received offers.

In the last few weeks alone, I’ve bought several names via Snap and NameJet   that have either received offers for at least double the purchase price (offers over $1k), or I’ve sold the domain names for at least double (under $10k each). Making it even better is the fact that a few of these domain names have had three or less bidders involved in the auction, meaning that I am finding hidden gems. I can say gems without question since they’ve sold or have received offers after buying as opposed to just being my opinion that I have found value where others didn’t. This is a pretty nice return on my investment.

I have a couple of filters that I created on FreshDrop to better enable me to find these names, although there is still the manual process of researching the individual domain names. For example, when I see a name that looks good to me, I will check the # of Google results for the term, the number of companies advertising on Google for the term, it’s GAKT search #s, and just my own gut feel vs. what other domain names companies are using in the market.

I know there are other sites out there that have a similar offering, but if you haven’t tried FreshDrop, I recommend trying it.

Domain Apps From WhyPark Now Live

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the Domain Apps from WhyPark that were coming soon. I just received word that the new apps are now live on site, and people with accounts at WhyPark can begin adding them to their existing websites or use them on new websites. Visit the WhyPark Domain Apps page for more information and to get started.

Domain owners can even integrate these onto content rich websites they have built on the WhyPark platform, which is similar to what I’ve done with TropicalBirds.com and plan to do with others as soon as I have time. I look forward to testing out the directory application very soon, and I will update you with my results in a couple of months.

In the last few months of integrating my content-rich TropicalBirds.com onto WhyPark, the revenue has gone up considerably.

OchoCinco Promoted and Uses Godaddy, But Camp Ocho Cinco Does Not

While watching the World Cup, I saw a Godaddy commercial featuring Chadocho Cinco, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver previously known as Chad Johnson. In the commercial, Chad mentions that his domain name is registered at Godaddy.

Truth be told, OchoCinco.com, the player’s official website is in fact registered with the world’s largest domain registrar, Godaddy. However, CampOchoCinco.com, a website promoted on the official website is actually registered at Dotster, a competing registrar.

I guess it would be similar to an athlete who is endorsed by Nike wearing Nike cleats on the field but Adidas sneakers in the weight room.
