ICANN Seeking Volunteers for UDRP Review Working Group

0

ICANN sent out a news alert yesterday calling for volunteers to participate on a new working group that will be created to “Review all Rights Protections Mechanisms in all generic top-level domains.” Among other things, this working group will be tasked with potentially overhauling the UDRP and URS procedures. This could have major ramifications for domain investors and domain name portfolio operators.

A week ago, Phil Corwin from the Internet Commerce Association wrote an article on CircleID about the importance of this working group and the impact its findings and recommendations may have on domain owners and domain investors. Phil also published an informative blog post about the working group on the ICA’s website. You should read both of these articles to get a better idea of why members of the domain investment community should consider participating on this working group.

Phil also commented to me about the importance in having solid representation among domain investors within this working group:

“These reviews, first of the new gTLD RPMs, followed by the first-ever review of the UDRP, may result in important changes to the treatment of domains within trademark law and ICANN rights protection processes. And those changes, once made, will probably last for at least a decade or two without further alteration. So anyone with an interest in registrant rights and domain valuations has a stake in their outcome.”

ICANN CEO Application Deadline Approaching

According to a news release this past May, current ICANN President and CEO Fadi Chehadé “will be concluding his tenure in March 2016 to move into a new career.” Because of his pending departure, ICANN is now seeking candidates for the CEO position, and the application deadline is Sunday, September 20, 2015.

Reset Your ICANN Website Password

It looks like ICANN has reason to believe that passwords and account information for users registered on its ICANN.org website have been hacked. I am on the ICANN email list, and I received a password reset email from the organization with information about why this reset is being requested.

Because of the importance of this matter, I am publishing the email that I received. I presume that people with ICANN online accounts have also received the same email.

Namecheap Launches RespectOurPrivacy.com

Namecheap has teamed up with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Fight for the Future to launch RespectOurPrivacy.com, a website that informs people about a potential policy change to the  Whois database  that ICANN is considering. A Whois change could eliminate domain  privacy and proxy services for domain name registrations, and that could have a serious repercussions for many domain owners  and business owners.

When you visit  the  RespectOurPrivacy.com  website, you are given information about how you  can “let ICANN know that you object to any release of personal information without a court order.” Visitors are able to submit comments directly to ICANN via the website, and I was told more than 5,000 comments were already  submitted to ICANN over the weekend, and over 360 voicemails were left.

According to the website, here is the issue at hand:

Job Opening? ICANN CEO to “End His Tenure” in 2016

I read a couple of tweets that mentioned that ICANN President and CEO Fadi Chehadé will be stepping aside next year. A few moments ago, I received an ICANN News Alert confirming this news.

According to the email I received from ICANN, “The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced that President and CEO Fadi Chehadé has informed the Board he will be concluding his tenure in March 2016 to move into a new career in the private sector (outside the Domain Name Industry).”

These are certainly interesting times for ICANN, and I am sure there will be quite a few people who wish to lead ICANN in the future. I am not much of an ICANN watcher or a person who spends much time thinking about Internet governance, but I am sure this news is of importance for those who are active in the ICANN community. ICANN 53 is coming up in about a month in Buenos Aires, and I presume this will be a topic of interest.

In case you don’t receive ICANN News Alerts but want to learn more, the content of the email has been published below:

Jeff Sass Asks if ICANN Will Help with “Universal Awareness”

0

On February 11th during ICANN 52 in Singapore, The Domain Name Association (The DNA) hosted a breakfast meeting with its members and ICANN President and CEO Fadi Chehadé. The 40+ minute video is worth a watch when you have some time, but I wanted to highlight a question asked by Jeff Sass, CMO of the .Club registry.

Jeff asked if ICANN is going to contribute some resources in order to help with “universal awareness.” Jeff mentioned that The DNA has two primary objectives – universal acceptance and universal awareness. Essentially, this means that the organization wants people to learn about the new gTLD domain names and wants to help promote the usage of the new domain names. It would make sense that ICANN, the organization that received many millions of dollars in application fees for the new TLDs, would help contribute to these ends.

Here’s how the question was answered:
