Geographic Domain Names

Arizona Daily Star Now Found at Tucson.com

If you visit the  Arizona Daily Star newspaper website, you’ll notice that the url has changed. Instead of using AZstarnet.com for its url, the newspaper can now be found on the Tucson.com domain name. All articles that once appeared on AZstarnet.com have been migrated and now forward to Tucson.com urls.

Historical Whois records show that the newspaper company has owned this domain name since at least 2000 (this is the earliest archived record). The domain name had reportedly previously been used as more of an events-related website prior to the change. The company plans to introduce a paywall at some point in the near future.

I am not all that familiar with the Arizona Daily Star, but this transition is

Bienvenue.Paris on Eiffel Tower

I thought you might want to see this photo of the Eiffel Tower in Paris that was taken this evening. As you can clearly see, there is advertisement for the Bienvenue.Paris website. For those who don’t speak French, bienvenue means “welcome.” Paris is one of my favorite cities in Europe, and in my opinion, having a large advertisement like this on the Eiffel Tower is great exposure for the .Paris domain name registry.

The .Paris gTLD domain extension is backed by Ville de Paris, the City of Paris, France. At the end of 2013, the City of Paris announced that it was looking for proposals for the first entities to utilize .Paris domain names. I would guess that this is one of those domain names, but I don’t know for certain. You can learn more about .Paris via 101Domain, and you can learn more about the .Paris Pioneer Program on InternetNews.ME.

It is unclear to me who owns the domain name. The Whois record lists the Registrant Name as Ville de Paris and the Registrant Organization as Hotel de Ville.

Thanks to Norm Ritchie for sharing this photo via Twitter, and thanks to  Michele Neylon of Blacknight Solutions for making me aware of its existence.

Are Nexus Requirements Good or Bad?

I believe that geographic new gTLD extensions are going to be successful. Cities have a built-in audience of businesses and residents who may wish to purchase their business or keyword domain name in their local extension. There are two different approaches to selling their domain names, and one involves limiting sales to entities within the geographic area and the other involves selling domain names to anyone. I am curious to know your thoughts on which is the better approach.

.NYC domain names will only be available to people who have a physical address in New York City. According to the .NYC registry website, “The City of New York desires to have only those individuals or entities having a substantive and lawful connection to the City be permitted to register for .NYC domain names.” On the other hand, .Vegas domain names will be available to anyone who wants to buy them. According to an email I received from the registry team, “.vegas is completely unrestricted, meaning anyone, anywhere in the world may register a web address with a .vegas extension.”

I think there are pros and cons to both approaches. I want to discuss my thoughts on

Thoughts About Geographic Keyword Domain Names

I’ve been a fan of geodomain names for several years. I’ve owned a number of city and town .com domain names over the years, and I’ve sold the majority of them. My company still operates Lowell.com, and although it doesn’t generate  all that much revenue, I enjoy operating the website. I like city/town/region/state/country exact match .com domain names, although I am only interested in buying them at exceptional prices these days.

A different but similar type of geodomain name is the geographic keyword domain names. For clarification purposes, I would classify domain names like BostonRealEstate.com, ChicagoDoctors.com, and NYCPlumbing.com as geographic keyword domain names. Some day, we may talk about names like Boston.Lawyers or Philadelphia.RealEstate, but for now, let’s stick with the others.

I am still a fan of

Magnetar Media in Joint Venture Launching Missouri.com

I saw the tweet above, and it stood out for two reasons. First, Missouri.com is an excellent domain name, and when I see an exact match domain name like this, it grabs my attention. Second, the photo of the person in the tweet is domain investor, Brian Null.

After seeing the tweet, I sent Brian an email to ask about Missouri.com, and he quickly responded. According to Brian, Missouri.com was launched in February by Magnetar Media, a company owned and operated by Brian and Mike Sullivan (publisher of SullysBlog.com). The domain name is still owned by domain investor Nat Cohen’s StateVentures, LLC, but Magnetar Media has a license deal to operate a website on the domain name. Details about the transaction are

.NYC Registry Update: Eligibility & Availability

nyc registryThe .NYC new gTLD extension is one of my favorites, and I think it has an excellent chance of being one of the most successful new domain name extensions. NYC / New York City is a brand in and of itself, and I believe there are enough people and businesses that will want to increase their connection with the City through a domain name. The City of New York is partnering with Neustar, who will manage and operate the .NYC domain registry.

Unfortunately for me, it doesn’t look like I am going to be able to purchase a .NYC domain name now that I no longer live in Manhattan (or anywhere NYC for that matter). According to a newsletter that was sent to subscribers by the .NYC registry today, .NYC domain names will only be available to purchase by “An entity or organization with a physical street address in the City, or An individual whose primary place of residence is in the City.”

I imagine there will be
