Generic Domain Names

BlackFriday.com and CyberMonday.com Do Well

For quite some time, there has been talk about whether owning exact match keyword domain names is helpful when it comes to Google search results. When it comes to Black Friday and Cyber Monday searches, I found that the exact match .com domain names, BlackFriday.com and CyberMonday.com, did very well in Google search results.

For Black Friday, I looked at 8 generic keyword searches in Google. These are popular keyword terms such as Black Friday, Black Friday Ads, Black Friday Sales, and other similar keyword terms. My research found that BlackFriday.com ranked #1 in Google for two of these eight searches, and it ranked in the top 3 results in Google for four of these searches.

TheBlackFriday.com, another website with a keyword domain name, also did very well, ranking in the top 3 results on seven of the eight searches. It ranked as the #1 result in Google for two of these general Black Friday searches.

For Cyber Monday, I looked at

Internships.com Acquired for $11 Million

According to a press release that was distributed yesterday, “Chegg acquired the data and assets of Internships.com for $10 million in cash and approximately $1 million in shares of Chegg Common Stock.” Clearly, this is not simply a domain name name sale, but rather the sale of a business that was established on an exceptional exact match .com domain name.

Chegg is a publicly traded company (ticker symbol CHGG on the NYSE) that specializes in textbook sales, college course assistance, and internship matching. Chegg was launched in 2005 and was officially founded in 2007. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2013.

Internships.com is billed as the

Will Facebook Buy Atlas.com?

Last year, Facebook acquired a company called Atlas, and according to the Wall Street Journal, the goal is for the company to “Challenge Google’s Dominance of the Online Ad Space.” With a mainstream advertising platform that will have extensive reach, I think it would be important for the company to own Atlas.com just as Google owns Adsense.com.

The “Atlas” branding is already used by many companies, and the inherent value of Atlas.com is significant. Additionally, the domain name is owned by a domain name savvy company, and the acquisition price of Atlas.com would likely be well into the seven figures. If you visit Atlas.com, you can see the Naming Rights brand, which is affiliated with many other exceptional domain name assets. Some other domain names associated with Naming Rights include Eye.com, Renovation.com, Soho.com, Contact.com, and a variety of other valuable domain names.

If you visit Atlas.com, you can see a sales pitch about why Atlas.com is such a valuable piece of Internet real estate. The landing page touches on the branding aspect as well as the inherent attributes a short domain name such as Atlas.com has. In addition, even prior to Facebook making Atlas more mainstream, the domain name sees a significant amount of traffic. According to

Primary.com Poised to Become a Children’s Clothing Brand

While doing some domain name acquisition research, I came across the descriptive domain name, Primary.com. The colorful landing page indicates that a launch is coming soon, and I shifted gears to learn more about the business rather than trying to acquire the domain name for my company. Since there was no revealing information about the company on the landing page, I did a bit of sleuthing to see who is behind this new brand.

Research on LinkedIn led me to find that the CEO and co-founder of Primary.com is Galyn Bernard, and the COO and co-founder is Christina Carbonell. Various articles found via Google showed me that both ladies appeared to be  rising stars on the marketing side of Quidsi before their departures at some point during the past year. As you likely know, Quidsi is the company that was acquired by Amazon and operates websites like Diapers.com, Soap.com, Wag.com, and several other e-commerce websites.

I got in touch with Bernard, and she shared some details about

Share Your Success Story

I frequently write about large domain name sales and smart domain name acquisitions. One thing that I would like to write more about is success stories involving descriptive keyword domain names. I am sure there are people who are doing well with business development on keyword domain names, and I would be happy to share your story.

I’ll give you an example. Sol Orwell shared insight about his success with Examine.com, and I thought the discussion that followed on Hacker News were interesting.

Information that I think would be beneficial include some of the following:

  • Revenue and traffic numbers
  • Marketing / advertising spend and efforts
  • Capital raising and growth funding
  • Social aspect
  • Personal stories about starting building the business
  • Complications and how you overcame them

Adam Strong Acquires Strong.com from Wells Fargo

I was reading the profile of Adam Strong on Donna Mahony’s blog, and I saw that Adam mentioned he acquired the Strong.com domain name. Obviously this domain name is perfect for him because it is his last name, but as a one word .com, it’s a valuable domain name asset as well.

Although Adam doesn’t want to share the sale price, he let me know that he was able to acquire the domain name via Domain Guardians. The company, made up of Mike Robertson and Jen Sale, represented Adam’s company as a buyer’s broker. When I asked why he didn’t approach the seller on his own, Adam told me, “I do a lot of buyer brokering myself and I know it’s good to take the emotion out of talks by using a third party. I figured the owner might also react differently to an approach from an organization rather than someone with the same last name.”

Prior to the acquisition, Strong.com was owned
