September Great Domains Auction Results

3

Sedo’s monthly Great Domains auction ended last week, and the results are posted below. In total, the auction netted $113,157.18 in sales (including sales in non USD currency) with 45 domain names sold. A number of other domain names were close to, but did not meet, the reserve prices.

Listed below are the sales from the latest auction:

Great Domains Auction Ending Today

Sedo’s monthly Great Domains auction for September is ending early this afternoon. This month, there are 386 domain names up for auction, and of those names, a little over a quarter of them have bids right now.

Interestingly from my point of view is that some of the better deals in this auction aren’t actually .com domain names. Here are some of the domain names that are up for auction that I think have decent reserve price ranges. I do not have any names in this auction:

Dave Evanson Reports 6 Figure Sale of Intranet.com

5

Sedo’s Dave Evanson is reporting that Intranet.com was sold via Sedo for $160,000. Based on the Whois change, it appears that the transaction took place last week.

At one point, the domain name had been owned by a Massachusetts company called ACI Worldwide. Screenshots.com shows an ACI payment systems logo as of 2010, but more recently, it appears that the domain name had been parked at Sedo.

The current Whois information is

Report: DJI.com Sold via Sedo $300,000

In a tweet this morning, Sedo domain broker Dave Evanson announced that the company has brokered the sale of DJI.com for $300,000. The former owner appears to be an individual from Miami Beach who had parked the domain name at Sedo. I don’t know if Sedo made an outreach to try and sell the domain name on behalf of the owner or if they negotiated via the Sedo landing page. I looked through my Gmail history, and I don’t see any mention of this domain name being brokered publicly before.

The new registrant appears to be a Chinese company called Dajiang Innovation Technology, Inc. They currently use DJI-Innovations.com for its website, and throughout the website, the company refers to itself as simply DJI. This domain name is certainly a nice upgrade.

The sale price of $300,000 is pretty remarkable for this domain name. On the face of it, I don’t see that much value, but of course a domain owner can only get that much money if he or she asks for it. From my experience, a very high asking price is usually a deal killer, but clearly the buyer wanted (or perhaps needed) this domain name enough to justify the purchase price.

Congratulations to all parties on this deal.

Thies Lindenthal at MIT: Full Time Research into Domain Markets

1

I want to share some news from Thies Lindenthal, the creator of IDNX, “the first scientific grade price index for Internet domain names,” operated by Lindenthal with extensive sales data from  Sedo. Using IDNX, you can see how domain names have performed since 2006 and compare the performance of the domain market to that of the NASDAQ 100.

Thies recently announced that he has begun a post-doctoral studies program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he will be researching the domain market in depth. The goal is of his research is produce empirical papers on several research questions, such as:

NicaraguaCanal.com: Smart End User Purchase

Reuters is reporting that “Nicaraguan lawmakers granted a 50-year concession to a Chinese company on Thursday for it to design, build and manage a shipping channel across the Central American nation that would compete with the Panama Canal.” The construction of this Nicaragua Canal would likely generate a significant amount of revenue for the country if/when it’s built.

Smartly, the company behind the Nicaragua Canal project appears to have bought the matching NicaraguaCanal.com domain name. The current registrant for the domain name is HK Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co., Ltd, which is the same company mentioned in the Reuters article.

NicaraguaCanal.com has a registration date of August of 2007, and it appears to have been owned by a domain investor. In 2009, the domain registration was made private. According to Daily Changes, the domain name was on Sedo DNS until September of 2012 when it moved to Afternic DNS. The Whois registration remained private until May 18, 2013. The domain name is still listed for sale on Sedo, but based on the current ownership, I would assume it’s a dated listing that should probably be taken down.

NicaraguaCanal.com does not currently resolve, but I assume the company has plans for it – or didn’t want someone else to control it. Interestingly, PanamaCanal.com appears to be owned by a tour company, not affiliated with the Panama Canal.
