Sell a Domain Name to the Domain King

It looks like “Domain King” Rick Schwartz has invited people to submit domain names for his purchase consideration via Twitter. If you have a good, non-new gTLD domain name for sale for $5,000 or below, Rick will give it consideration.

I presume all submissions should be made via Twitter, and if you submit a domain name to Rick for consideration, he asked for the right of first refusal for four hours.

One thing to keep in mind is that the domain name should be worth much more than $5k (at least from Rick’s perspective). He later added that he buys domain names that he believes has at least 10x upside. Put simply, a domain name that Rick will buy for $5k should be able to be sold at some point in the future for at least $50k.

Rick did not say whether he will definitely buy a domain name or not, but this is a good way for him (and others) to see what’s on the market in that price range. My guess is he will be inundated with bad domain names, but maybe he will find something good.

A UDRP was filed at the World Intellectual Property Organization against the high value Queen.com domain name. The case is WIPO Case D2017-0679.

Queen.com is a domain name that is owned by Rick Schwartz, who is commonly referred to as the “Domain King.” According to an article written in 2013 on Rick’s Blog, he was able to acquire the domain name in August of 1997. Rick’s company owns a ton of great dictionary .com domain names, and the monetization and sale of some of these domain names has made him millions of dollars.

In the aforementioned  article about Rick’s purchase of Queen.com, he shared why his company acquired the domain name.  Queen.com has many different meanings. Among those meanings, and the one mentioned by Rick in his article, is adult related. As such, Queen.com is currently forwarding to an adult website, where it is likely making Rick a considerable amount of income. It seems pretty clear that buying the domain name was a good decision, as it has earned “into the 6 figures because that traffic was very valuable.”

Estibot  currently lists the value of Queen.com at $1.2 million, and I would be surprised if Rick would even consider selling the domain name at that price.

Rick Schwartz Rails Against New Extensions

Rick “Domain King” Schwartz has never been a proponent of the new gTLD extensions. Rick has invested in quite a few non .com domain names, but I think he has been fairly outspoken against the new extensions for quite some time. I recall a panel at the 2013 TRAFFIC conference in which Rick and Lonnie Borck debated the new gTLD domain names against leaders of companies in that space.

During the last several days, Rick has taken to Twitter to share his strong feelings about the current state of the new domain name extensions. Although Rick has over 1,000 tweets on Twitter, he had taken a long hiatus from posting until February 25th. In the past few days, he has unleashed a fury of tweets about the new domain extensions, the new gTLD aftermarket, companies that sell domain names, and more. Earlier today, George Kirikos tweeted about a $13.5 million round of funding for a company called Teem, that had previously been known as EventBoard:

TRAFFIC Keynote Speakers Announced

Rick Schwartz announced the two keynote speakers for the TRAFFIC conference coming up at the end of the month, and I think both are excellent choices. Howard Lefkowitz, the former President and CEO of Vegas.com, will be speaking on Friday, May 30 at 11:30 in the morning.  Duane Forrester, Senior Product Manager at Bing, will be speaking on Thursday, May 29 at 10:15 in the morning.

You have mostly likely heard of Vegas.com. If not, it is probably the best geodomain success story. The company is an all encompassing Las Vegas travel website where you can book vacations, make dinner reservations, and read about Las Vegas tours and activities. Lefkowitz joined the company in 2001, and until then end of his tenure in 2010, he helped to grow the heck out of the company and brand. Duane Forrester is a search expert, and in his position at Bing, he helps webmasters and publishers learn about how to leverage their content to improve their visibility. He  has spoken at most of the major SEO and webmaster conferences, and his opinions and feedback are highly sought after.
