After 6 Figure Acquisition, I-Newswire.com Rebrands as Newswire.com

I-Newswire.com is a popular press release distribution service, and the company rebranded yesterday as Newswire.com. Obviously, this is a major upgrade for the company, and it came at a fairly steep price.

According to Michael Santiago, Partner at Newswire.com, the company pursued the domain name for quite some time before turning to Domain Holdings to act as a buyers’ broker. Michael told me the domain name was purchased last week after more than a year of negotiations. The company paid in the “six figure range” to acquire this domain name.

I asked Michael to share some additional insight into the acquisition to learn what motivated the company to spend six figures on this domain name, and here’s what he had to say:

Report: Sofa.com Sold in Deal Worth Between ” £40m and £50m”

There have been reports that Sofa.com, a furniture manufacturer and retailer, has been sold. According to an article in The Telegraph a couple of days ago, “CBPE, formerly Close Brothers Private Equity, which also owns the Côte restaurant chain, is understood to have paid between £40m and £50m for the online sofa business.” Financial Times also published a story with this news.

The story of how the owners acquired Sofa.com for $215,000 is possibly one of the craziest I’ve heard about in the domain business. The short version is that Pat Reeves and Rohan Blacker

OnDeck Launches BusinessLoans.com

In a press release earlier this week, OnDeck, a small business lender, announced the launch of “their Small Business Credit Education Initiative to educate and engage business owners on business financing and credit.” Wisely, they are using the exact match keyword  BusinessLoans.com domain name for the website.

I am unsure of when OnDeck acquired this domain name, but my guess is that the acquisition was fairly recent because the Archive.org history shows an unrelated website last year. Interestingly, the singular BusinessLoan.com domain name sold for $70,000 via GoDaddy Auctions, as reported on OnlineDomain.com.

I checked my Gmail history, and in February of 2013, BusinessLoan.com and BusinessLoans.com were listed for sale in Toby Clements’ domain brokerage newsletter. I don’t know if they sold then (or at any  point), although the singular BusinessLoan.com domain name is not currently resolving. Both domain names are privately registered.

Here’s the press release in its entirety with additional information about the domain name and branding initiative:

Button Should Buy Button.com

This morning, Jason Del Rey published an article on re/code about a company called Button that has raised a significant amount of investment money. According to Del Rey, “One startup trying to ride that wave is Button, a New York City-based company which is today announcing a $12 million Series A investment less than a year after its launch.”

I presume it was unintentional, but the re/code article did not include an outbound link to the Button website. I searched Google, and the first result was W3Schools’ HTML button tag page. The second result was the Wikipedia page for “button,” but it has no relationship to the startup. Following these two entries are some images, and the startup called Button is listed below that (they use UseButton.com).

While reading the article, I recalled hearing about the Button.com domain name. If you visit Button.com, you can see the Domain Holdings inquiry page. A quick check of my email history shows that it is being brokered by Tracy Fogarty of Domain Holdings. In my opinion, the startup should work out a deal to buy this valuable domain name that matches the name of the company.

One of the downsides to using a

Move to Jazz.org Raises Concerns

When my wife and I lived in New York City, attending concerts and performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) was one of our favorite things to do. We lived 13 blocks from the Time Warner Center, and one of my friends dated someone that worked there. Until this morning, I didn’t know that the JALC website had been moved to the keyword Jazz.org domain name, which JALC seems to have owned for several years.

Interestingly, this change apparently caused some discontent, according to an article on TheJazzLine.com. The article cites a Change.org petition that was started by a former Vice President of Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The Change.org petition says,

Report: Owners.com Acquired for $20 Million+

A real estate website operating on an exact match .com domain name has been acquired for a considerable sum of money. Owners.com, “one of the largest marketplaces of self-directed home buyers and sellers,” was acquired by a company called Altisource Portfolio Solutions S.A. Altisource already operates a real estate auction marketplace called Hubzu.com.

According to this November 24th press release I read  this morning, “Altisource purchased the company for $20 million at closing and up to an additional $7 million in potential consideration based on revenue earned in the two consecutive 12-month periods following closing.” Obviously this is not a simple domain name sale, but it marks the sale of another business using a keyword .com domain name as a brand.

There have been several large sales and deals involving real keyword domain names and businesses that use keyword domain names as brands in the real estate s[ace. Some of these sales and deals include the following domain names and businesses:
