US Futsal has Best Domain Name

My son plays soccer pretty much year-round. In the Winter, his team practices a couple of times a week, but they don’t have a regular match schedule beyond a single tournament in Florida. To supplement this, he plays for his club’s Futsal team in the Winter. Futsal is a small-sided version of soccer played indoors on a hard court with a smaller and heavier ball.

The biggest news last week was that $70 million acquisition of AI.com, a historic deal brokered by Larry Fischer. The buyer of AI.com was the Founder of Crypto.com, Kris Marszalek. AI.com will feature in a Super Bowl commercial this evening.

This wasn’t the only domain name-related news from Crypto.com last week. The company also announced the launch of a brand called OG, a prediction market platform that operates on its brand matching OG.com domain name. News about the launch of OG was published on the Crypto.com website on February 3.

Should Fred Mercaldo Rebrand His Company?

4

Fred Mercaldo is a longtime domain name investor, developer, and broker primarily known for working with geographic .com domain names. Fred has led development and sales efforts for numerous geographic domain names that have become brands. In fact, I first came to know Fred when he was operating Scottsdale.com.

Fred’s company is called Geocentric Media, but he is considering a rebrand because his business has expanded beyond geodomain names. As noted in a lengthy post on LinkedIn, Fred is considering rebranding his company’s name to Omni World Media. He asked for feedback about this potential rebrand.

I like Fred’s Geocentric brand name, but I see his point about it being most specific to geodomain names despite expanding beyond that. With that being said, it’s “geocentric” whereby geo is the central theme but not exclusively, so it still works as far as I am concerned. I almost feel like Omni World is too broad of a brand name. Maybe that’s good.

Have a look at Fred’s LinkedIn post, and if you have an opinion one way or another, feel free to share your insights here or there.

Icy Studios Upgrades to Icy.com in 7 Figure Acquisition

The valuable Icy.com domain name has reportedly been acquired for a 7 figure sum. Manik Kundra, who founded a company called Icy Studios, announced the acquisition on LinkedIn last night. His company has used IcyStudios.com since its founding, and Icy.com now forwards to the company’s website.

Prior to the acquisition, Icy.com was owned by Brandforce. The archived landing page for Icy.com shows the minimum offer to inquire about Icy.com was $2 million USD. I asked Louis Pickthall, Co-Founder and Vice President of BrandForce, if he could share the sale price for this domain name, but he was unable to do so. He did confirm that he brokered the sale of this domain name.

Peter Askew Sells DudeRanch.com

I can’t say I ever had the desire to take a vacation on a dude ranch, but Peter Askew’s development of DudeRanch.com made that an appealing thought. Over the years, Peter shared photos and stories about his development of the brand he built, and I found myself researching a dude ranch vacation with my family.

Nearly a month ago, Peter mentioned that he was considering the sale of the domain name and business. Yesterday, Peter followed-up indicating the business was sold for an undisclosed amount. The deal was closed via the Quiet Light brokerage:

Zomato Launches Nugget; Acquires Nugget.com

Last week, James Booth announced that he sold the Nugget.com domain name, which was listed for sale via Atom.com. He was unable to share the sale price due to a non-disclosure agreement, but he speculated it was bought by a casino or something similar.

It turns out, Nugget.com was acquired by Zomato, an India-based food delivery platform. The company already launched its offering, and it forwards Nugget.com to a Zomato subdomain – Nugget.Zomato.com. Nugget
