Nike Makes Top 10 .Net Trending Keywords

I like looking at the monthly keyword reports issued by Verisign. In a blog post today, the company shared the “Top 10 Trending Keywords in .Com & .Net Registrations in October“. I was a bit surprised at one of the top 10 .net keywords from last month.

Can you guess which keyword threw me off? “Nike.” Being on the list does not mean that “Nike” was one of the 10 most frequently measured keywords last month. As explained at the bottom of the blog post, “[e]ach list was developed by examining keyword registration growth relative to the preceding month, such that those keywords with the highest percentage of registration growth are being reported on.

I am surprised that in 2015, a trademark word is trending for domain registrations. Do people not understand the risk of owning and using a domain name with a common trademark?

In any event, check out the trending keyword list when you have a chance. It would be neat if other domain registries shared similar reports so we could see if these keywords are trending across various extensions. Considering the difference keywords in .com and .net, my guess is no because of the fewer registrations in other extensions compared to .net and .com.

  1. Here’s a thought E and I am too lazy..why not look at new regs for the term Nike and see if it’s a knock off industry selling goods?
