AngelCity.com Acquired for $60,000

According to an article in the New York Times a little over a week ago, a new professional US women’s soccer team has been established. The NWSL expansion team will begin playing during the 2022 season, and it will call Los Angeles its home. A number of famous women make up the ownership group, including Mia Hamm, Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria, Serena Williams, and many others. The franchise will be known as Angel City.

Angel City has been using the four word WeAreAngelCity.com domain name for its team website. I recently learned the shorter AngelCity.com domain name was acquired within the last week for $60,000 via GoDaddy/Afternic. The former owner of the domain name shared the sale price with me, and he sent me an account screenshot with the $60,000 price listed. GoDaddy does not share or confirm domain name sales closed via its network, so I do not have independent confirmation of the sale price. According to NameBio, the domain name previously traded hands at SnapNames for $5,200 in 2007.

Although the Whois record for AngelCity.com is currently privacy protected at Google’s domain registrar, AngelCity.com now forwards to WeAreAngelCity.com. I would not be surprised if the soccer team opts to use the shorter, brand match AngelCity.com domain name for its website in the future.

Assuming Ron Jackson and NameBio are independently able to confirm the sale of AngelCity.com, it will rank right around the top 50 publicly reported domain name sales of 2020.
